Christian May.
After viewing all election hustings so far during this Senatorial by election, I have noticed that Christian May could have, what looks to be, "involuntary arm movement." I have witnessed this (involuntary arm movement) before but couldn't think where.
Christian claims not to be a part of "The Establishment" and also claims he is not anti-establishment. So I thought; "what could he be?" Then it came to me................ Being a fan of the Inbetweeners TV programme, I realised that he's an Inbetweener, which also reminded me of where I had seen that involuntary arm movement before. It was on an episode of the Inbetweeners. (Series 3 episode 2)
In a very short (35 second) video clip (below) we have squeezed in four separate Hustings Meetings to demonstrate this.
The video below is published in the spirit of light-hearted fun in an attempt to inject a little humour into the political process/By-Election which can get quite ugly at times. In this regard we will NOT be publishing any negative comments against any of the candidates in this Blog Posting.
If you wish to leave a comment supporting your favoured candidate they are:
Alvin Aaron.
Guy De Faye.
Mike Dun.
Sarah Ferguson.
Nick Le Cornu.
Christian May.
Sam Mezec.
Stevie Ocean.
Mary O’Keeffe-Burgher.
Hugh Raymond.
John Young.
All candidates opening speeches (from St. Clement Hustings) can be viewed HERE. Not forgetting you can also vote for your preferred candidate on the poll situated at the left hand-side of this page.
"Ambulance or Mummy"? Sounds what Jersey needs as our island's soul (and economy) is surely stuck in A & E.
ReplyDeleteBut a nice bit of fun and I am sure Christian will take it in good spirit.
Being an Inbetweeners fan too I think we all know that Senator Ozouf is really Jay in disguise. Nobody else could exaggerate like that!
ReplyDeleteGood and informative.
ReplyDeleteGiven his apparent interest in Jersey sports I guess Hugh Raymond must be a 'Football Friend'?
ReplyDeleteI am voting Christian William Mckensie after this video.
ReplyDeleteIf Christian or any of the candidates get a bit down about their chances at any time, or wonder what the world is all about. All they need to do is remember that according to Neil GOD is just DOG spelt backwards. Helps me to make sense of the world.
DeleteI see in the Filthy Rag that former Senator Ben Shenton, the man with the worst attendance record in States history, is calling for a deposit scheme so that only rich, lazy, stupid people can afford to stand for election. Surely a more urgent need is a system to impose huge fines and ultimately exclusion of States Members who take the taxpayers' money but push off to their day job after the register at sittings?
ReplyDeleteShenton was an arrogant disgrace in the States. Who can forget his shameful attacks on Lenny Harper. A truly useless politician who only got elected off his father's reputation.
DeleteThe damage Shenton and his sidekick Jimmy Perchard did to both the Health service and the abuse victims with their antics was immense and unforgivable. You need to look no further than Family X.
DeleteFormer Deputy T Pitman famously outed Shenton for the lazy hypocrite he is/was a few years back in the States. Okay so Ben Gone-by-Ten wasn't the only one with a lousy attendance record. But he was the only one making speeches about value for money from politicians only to then bog off to his private business while we mug taxpayers footed the bill. Bet he'll be trying to make a comeback in 2018 with his business allegedly not doing great. Useless. Please move to the Bahamas Ben.
DeleteGood video. Very humorous and not hurting anyone.
ReplyDeleteThese candidates all look a bunch of bus****ers to me.
DeleteSpot on. What a difference this highly amusing and very inventive bit of good natured fun is compared to the abuse the Jersey Evening Post encourages to fulfil its on-going hatred of the Pitmans who they tried to bully. Long may your top notch blog flourish.
Delete'Feisty one you are!'
ReplyDeleteWhat day is the election, please? I want to vote for Will.
ReplyDeleteWednesday I believe.
DeleteI wonder if Stevie Ocean will have people like David Cameron and Barack Obarma standing outside the various parish halls wearing an Ocean rosette? Could be a good day for autograph hunters?
ReplyDeleteKeith Vaz accused of being a Paedo?

Election w@nkers!
ReplyDeleteI know this is slightly off subject but I hope your readers will be trying to go along to the Jersey Air Display. What a brilliant job Deputy Michael Higgins does in running it for our island every year.
ReplyDeleteMr Higgins is the best Deputy in St Helier No3/4 by a mile and it would have been great to see him run for Senator. A real man of the people and so hard working. The polar opposite of former Senator Ben Shenton mentioned above.
Hopefully he will be joined in the States after tomorrow by either Mike Dun or young Samuel Mezec who I also admire.
ReplyDelete@13.51 is Talking of Ben Shenton signing in then walking out, how about living in London most of the time, and how about loyalty to your island and the ninty day tax rule, is he now deemed an English resident for tax purposes ? Is his wage of over £40,000 taxed by the UK inland revenue and paid by Jersey.
Everyone is allowed to have a close loving partner, but how many elected politicians in the world receive tax funded flights each and every week, to spend most of the week to be with their partner who happens to live in London. It is common knowledge that Senator Philip Ozouf's present partner resides in London.
How many States sittings and debates has he missed ?
Imagine a politician living in Westminister and and flying everyweek to Jersey to stay with their loved one and still claim to look after business at home including their constituents, there would be a national outcry. Philip Ozouf is taking the p**s and a weak Chief Minister and his cronies allow this misappropriation of public funds, and abuse while in public office, while raising taxes and cutting services.
At least B. Shenton was on island for the Majority of time and contactable.
Totally agree about the Ozouf situation. But...
DeleteDoes anyone know exactly how much time he spends on island or in London precisely. Like it or not if he is here most of the week then just departs for the weekend, back again Monday loathe his politics and incompetence as | do I would have to say this is still acceptable.
As for Ben Shenton his behaviour in the States was an insult to all. I recall him coming top of the missed vote league monitored by the admittedly equally useless Jeremy Macon. More than 150 missed votes in just one year if my memory is what it used to be.
Chatting about this the other day at work my line manager, who till a year ago used to have the radion throughout every States debate (I know, |I know we ought to take him to an employment tribunal for making us suffer!) reckons Shenton missed more than 600 votes in his one period as a Senator.
If that is true then to me that really is taking the p*ss. He really should stay in his private sector box now and keep his mouth shut. Better still maybe, go and live with his chum Ozouf in London?
What was the turnout like at the Saint Helier hustings and is it on line anywhere yet?
ReplyDeleteSeemed pretty healthy and you can watch it on line at voteje like all of the others. If you do you will be pleased to know that Stevie Ocean has saved us from a terroist threat via his friends at the Whitehouse etc.
Delete
ReplyDeleteThanks to VFC and the above poster at 10.11. It was with pleasure and some emtertainment value that I was able to watch the final hustings at home, to determine my final choice from the three on my shortlist. Am I the only one that did not realise the candidates expressing their views at the hustings were on line.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnbl80DRCNc#t=7167
The very amateur chairman Malcolm Ferey got correctly slapped down towards the end ( 1hr.48 in ) when he decided on chairmans privilege what ever that is to ask his own question ? It is the public that needs questions answered thats why you are there.
An audience member refused to obey the chairmans privilege ploy refusing to sit down and approached the panel. The chairman gave in and the man asked his question and Eddie Noel and Constable Crowcroft got slammed. Clearly a feeling of anger in the room. Nice guy Stevie Ocean - and acts as mad as a barrel of frogs. John Young appeared the strongest Sam Meznec was excellent and Ferguson great and hopefully she will go for election next time.
I think that a comment from your previous blog bears repeating.
ReplyDelete"Agree with the above poster, Ferguson, Young or Sam would be a satisfactory result, but remember the last election, it was between Ferguson and Ozouf, in the recount Ozouf found that he had over two hundred votes more. Some people may view that as strange ?
Desperate times need desperate measures to keep the balance of power.
If the powers that be, can transfer multi million pound publicly owned assets to arms length groups of their friends, ex politicians, ex civil servants and yes men to do with as they wish the under a cloak of secrecy call it all commercially sensitive therefore not in the publics interest to know, messing with an election is a piece of cake.
Is the first citizen, the Bailiff our head judge and head of the judiciary going to stand up and say democracy is becoming a distant memory on Jersey ? Of course not when they have awarded him a ten percent increase on his remuneration package every year for the last five years. He now gets £337,000 to not get involved.
More than twice the pay packet of the UK prime minister.
Is this why he removed the covenant in the Royal court allowing Eddie Noel to charge St Helier residents for waste disposal ? Bit of a ramble but Ferguson and Young have the experiance and backbone to try and get answers out of these self interested some say corrupt ars***s"
Now is that poster REALLY SUGGESTING that these pillars of our community would rig a couple of hundred votes to get their man in under the wire?
That is almost as rediculous as suggesting that they would allow/facilitate or cover up decades of child abuse!
.......Oh Crap, you are bu@@ered!
Just to let our readers know that i will be on BBC Radio Jersey on Thursday at 11am talking about the by-election result with Chris Rayner and Adrian Lee.
ReplyDeleteYou should give us your top three predictions first.
DeleteMay
DeleteFerguson
Mezec
I think I will go with.
Delete1st) Sam Mezec
2nd) Sarah Ferguson
3rd) Christian May
Not based on anything scientific just the gut feeling.
Delete1st) Trevor Pitman
2nd) Stuart Syvret
3rd) Shona Pitman
No, hang on! all of those have been prevented/disqualified from standing by bent Jersey court cases, even involving Jurats known to support child abusers!
.......Yup, you lot are bu@@ered!
Just seen the Christian May piece. Hilarious😄😄
ReplyDeleteEqually gut
ReplyDeleteMay 4330
Mezec 3800
Ferguson 3600
Young 2900
De Faye 180
O'Heck Burghers 175
Le Cornu 74
Alvin. 27
I think you need to revise your numbers. There will be about 8,000 votes cast today. Could be very close.
ReplyDeleteYou are forgetting all of Stevie's celebrity friends. Think he'll get 18,973. And then turn down the job to head up Walt Disney.
DeleteI hope Mike Dun wins. Best candidate by a mile. A sort of nice hybrid of Harry Potter's Prof Dumbledorf and Jeremy Corbyn. Stand again in 2018 Mike if you don't get in. We need good people like you.
ReplyDeleteFrom media reports I had understood that Zoe Cameron resigned because she had been "ineffective"
ReplyDeleteI did not see this before:
Senator Zoe Cameron actually resigned over island's culture of denial
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-jersey-36776601
Mike Dun has DUN GREAT wherever he finishes. Trouble is in Jersey too many people are stupid or apathetic. Many are actually both. Go again in 18 months Mike.
ReplyDeleteHalf the parishes declared and Sarah Ferguson leads Sam Mezec by +20%
ReplyDeleteMezec could win if the more populous parishes go his way.
Mezec topped the poll in St.Saviour.
DeleteHe could also in St.Clement, St.Helier and maybe even St.Brelade
May is dis mayed
ReplyDeleteO'Kheesse-Burgher is toast
So the stupid, lazy muppets of St Helier could have won the election? But stayed in watching telly and getting pissed? But tomorrow they will be complaining.
ReplyDeleteSt. Helier hasn't declared yet.
DeleteToo much to pull back and a disgusting 11% turnout in Sam's own district. he must be sickened. Since the district lost Shona Pitman to the Bailiff's bent court turnout has plummeted. Too many people don't like Geoff Southern for all his hard work. Rubbing off on poor Sam. Feel so sorry for him.
DeleteMezec is +500 behind with only St.Helier yet to declare, could go either way.
DeleteEither way VFC's gut feeling of
1st) Sam Mezec
2nd) Sarah Ferguson
3rd) Christian May
was not far out.
Mike Dun deserved so much better.
ReplyDeleteYes a great guy and a great thinker
DeleteI bet Christian's arms are whirling like windmills tonight. Involuntarily of course.
ReplyDeleteMike Dun IS a great bloke and a true campaigner for justice and fairness.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you ever want to bother fighting for this island Mike? You would need to be a saint.
To think some of us keep asking others who have given their all to stand again. Leave them in peace I say. This island makes me sick.
Sarah Ferguson wins by 131 votes
ReplyDeleteThat was close
Poor Sam. Betrayed by the couch potatoes. Alright at least the Establishment boy May got thrashed but still disappointing.
ReplyDeleteI am gutted for Christian May.
ReplyDeleteI am even more gutted for Sam Mezec. A great campaign. The boy did good.
ReplyDeleteCan I say that I am most gutted of all for Mike Dun. A true thinker and gentleman.
ReplyDeleteThat's a result if Sarah Ferguson continues to avoid the establishment pimps
ReplyDeleteSam Mezec has confirmed himself as a realistic (near certain even) Senatorial candidate in 2018
I hope Rico points out on the BBC that the most revealing points emerging from this result is that the annointed Establishment candidate(s) no longer won.
ReplyDeleteOkay so the Leftist candidate did not quite top the poll but he thrashed both Establishment candidates by big margins.
The public (those who bothered to vote) simply went for that other great Jersey Way fallacy 'the experienced, safe pair of hands' Nothing against Sarah Ferguson here either. Whatever her right wing politics generally she is her own woman.
Much as I can't stand Geoff Southern's posturing this result is a positive one for the Left and indication that big progress could be made if they can unearth a few candidates of a Trevor Pitman quality. In my view quality candidates for the Left is the key to everything now.
The only true negative for the Left is that they still could not get nearly enough of the St. Helier voters out to vote because just a few percent more would have seen Sam Mezec on the Senatorial benches.
Actually but for other distractions like Mr Le Cornu taking crucial but priceless votes Sam might have got their regardless.
A lot for Prof Adrian Lee to think about.
Nick Le Cornu's 139 votes stopped Sam Mezec winning. he ought to ashamed. SPLITTER!
ReplyDeleteI hope Nick Le Cornu realises he has killed any remote chance of a comeback in St Helier? The votes wasted on him were so important. A Splitter he most certainly is and he cost Sam dear. He should hang up his rosette and do us all a favour. 69 votes in the whole of St Helier shows what a joke figure he has made himself.
DeleteSam lost by just 131 votes. Most blame must go down to the St Helier residents who could not be bothered to vote as others have pointed out. But Nick getting just 139 votes total also should not be overlooked.
DeleteHe had no chance but could not resist standing. Is this delusion or just loving being up there on a hustings? I really do not know.
But it is true that those 139 votes which were so meaningless for Nick would have been huge for Sam. Unfortunately I think Nick is now not just going to be loathed by the right but also by the left.
Only himself to blame. Again.
"An abysmal turnout, a lack of factual background material available to the public on the candidates and their past voting and political records and a situation not helped by an outdated first past the post election system.
ReplyDeleteThe outcome. We elected a senator who said on radio she'd have supported UKIP at the last UK election, is sceptical to put it mildly on climate change, and opposes most renewable energy options. Of course none of that was mentioned on her election leaflet. She did talk and write about opposing new taxes/charges, but forget to mention she voted for GST and against exemptions when she had the power to do so in the States. Maybe she has changed her mind, we might have known had there been anything like debate in the election and detailed reporting in the press on issues rather than caricatures and snide observation on husting attendance.
This isn't working, but how to change. It isn't arguing about electoral change and constitution . It isn't angry letters to the JEP (though that might help you feel better), it is to take back the communications between the activists and the public, not let intermediaries and commercial interests have a stranglehold . Online helps a little with that, but not enough - it needs activists on streets year round connecting with people face to face , door to door. Very old fashioned, very effective, almost impossible on any meaningful scale without structure and organisation and resources.
Don't get mad, get active!"
http://jerseytoday.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/by-election-result.html
Dr. Mark Forskitt
Grassroots activism has always been the key to turning things around in this brain-washed island. The thing I loved about the JDA was suddenly here was a group visible every week with a stall in town, talking to people about the issues, knocking on doors. It was like a throwback to decades ago and for a couple of years flourished. The JDA could have grown and likely would have but for the huge dislike of Deputy Southern's manner and the early chickening out of Judy Martin. They should reform it. Perhaps even better reform the old JDM from when I was a much younger man.
ReplyDeleteAfter Christian May's claimed procession to the Senatorial benches imploded, being exposed as a big, damp squib where presentation over content was the order of the day your highlighting of "Ambulance or Mummy" seems pretty uncanny.
ReplyDeletePS
To blow my own trumpet I had Ferguson winning closely from Mezec from the start. What I didn't quite forsee was that turnout in our capital would become even worse.
Am I right in hearing that Rico Sorda said Christian May is un-electable when he came 3rd with over 2.018 votes?
ReplyDeleteI’ve not heard Rico say that. Where do you think you heard it?
DeleteYou just answered your own question. But not exactly what i said.
DeleteYes its true, the presenter quickly changed the subject though.
DeleteNick isn't a member of Reform so was entitled to do as he so pleased.
DeleteRe:
Delete"Yes its true, the presenter quickly changed the subject though."
What do you think is true? That Rico DID (which he DIDN’T) say that Christian May was unelectable? Or you think Christian May is unelectable?
Not my comment. But for my two p's worth May will get elected eventually though not as a Senator. As others have astutely remarked what is very telling is the May and Cheese-Burgher, the Establishment candidates, got hammered by someone independent of them. sadly that independent was not a progressive like Sam but still hugely significant. From what I am hearing today in my own circles the Establishment are somewhat shocked. The progressives now need to build on this over the next two years by (somehow) getting other well known, progressive leaners to work with them. Join would be even better. But give Mezec his due. he has a lot to do in my eyes to become as good as some of the ex-States members who get talked about on here. But the boy did well. Very well. Who knows. A short back and sides might even have swung it?
DeleteTrue Rico. But Nick must be deluded. he has turned himself into a joke. Someone who can't let go still dreaming of the glory days. Too many in Jersey like that. Just look at Gy De faye.
DeleteI think that having failed in two elections Christian May might be unelectable. Sometimes for no apparent reason this happens. I have absolutely nothing against Christian May. I was shocked at how few votes he received.
DeleteHe ticks all the right boxes, has a very good campaign team who worked extremely hard but the voters didn't take to him. This has now happened twice.
Dandy Warhol you can say the same about all of last nights losers including Sam. Until any of them get over the finishing line they are not a Senator and are probably only suited or dare I say safer contesting a Deputies role. Rico it did sound like you said Christian May was unelectable, I will have to listen back.
DeleteWhat did Prof Lee make of the very good performance by the Left and the collapse of the Establishment vote? Couldn't listen at work.
DeleteMezec still did well. Much better than May and O'Keefe-Burgher. You can't put him in the same bracket as them. Personally if circumstances had been different I would have liked to see a Montfort Tadier, Trevor Pitman or Mike Higgins standing. That extra bit of age, life experience and clout would likely have made the difference. But regardless, as others have said, give young Mezec his due. He can be proud of himself. As for the Establishment the bottom of the barrel has been scraped.Mmaybe next time they will have to support Stevie Ocean for real?
DeleteNeed new people.
DeleteI doubt Trevor Pitman will be keen to stand again and Mike Higgins announced retirement after this term.
States Members are like footballers, they come and go, need new people with fresh ideas.
Trevor Pitman and Mike Higgins should be forced to stand again to try and save our rapidly sinking island.
DeleteAs for needing 'new' people not at all. And 'fresh ideas' sounds a cliche. We have had lots of 'fresh ideas' we just need enough people to work together to make them work.
And enough dopey idiots to realise moaning does nothing. You need to miss Eastenders for once get out and vote.
Otherwise we'll allow numpties like Pinel, Pryke, Moore, Noel, Bryans, Luce, Routier and co to get in again and again.
The Doctor was also accurate in his eve of poll posting. Right down to 'He (Sam Mezec) is in with a chance of winning, all depending on the turnout in St Helier'...
ReplyDeletehttp://jerseytoday.blogspot.com/2016/09/senatorial-by-election-eve-of-poll.html
How many elections have Nick Le Cornu, Mary Keef o' Fishburger and Guy de Fake lost to date?
ReplyDeleteAfter so many attempts you should be made to pay costs.
What about Gino Risiloi?
DeleteDoes anybody else think that Sam Mezec should go for Senator in 2018?
ReplyDeleteTurnout a damn disgrace. We need an Australian style compulsory voting law so long as a none of the above option is included. Tax forms are compulsory so why not?
ReplyDelete"True Rico. But Nick must be deluded. he has turned himself into a joke."
ReplyDeleteNick destroyed himself with that Tweet and then destroyed himself again with the cringe worthy interviews and blame game after losing re-election. He took votes off Sam last night and 139 votes for Nick with 131 the difference at the top gets you thinking. Could Sam have won had he not stood, possibly..
Don't forget Nick's comment about terminally ill States Members.
DeleteNick had the potential to be a most explosive cannon. Unfortunately he usually had it pointed at his own foot.
DeleteSam has a big decision to make in 2018. 2yrs is a very long time in politics. Safe in number 2 district or into never never land of the senatorials
ReplyDeleteIf Sam does not go for Senator in 2018 after last nights close result then he cannot be confident.
DeleteWho can be fully 'confident'? look at Christian May - highly confident and confidence highly misplaced. What is important is having good people in the States. Senator or Deputy doesn't really matter.
DeleteSam can be more confident than Christian that's for sure. What was all the hype about?
Delete' Senator or Deputy doesn't really matter.'
ReplyDeleteIt does matter because you can argue that you were elected into the States by the whole Island and not a Deputy's district. It's seen as a higher role by most.
But has no more power and is actually a role where successful election is more about having the right background, high-profile job or name. The downside of this is obvious. It allows bone idle, none too sharp populists like Ben Shenton to get elected because of his locally famous father. Or Philip Bailhache to get elected because he was a Bailiff. Even though he turns a blind eye to convicted child abusers joining and working in the Honorary Police. There should be one type of member, JMPs which even parish Constables could also be in the States.
DeleteThen why are Deputies Ministers?
ReplyDeleteBecause people like Rod Bryan's are elevated to Ministership on the sheer power of their drive, intellect and ability.
DeleteI am really annoyed. Why hasn't anyone told me it is April 1st?
DeleteI wouldn't credit him with the drive, intellect and ability to sit the right way up on a bog seat without written instructions.
DeleteMy comment 17.11 was just a little tongue in cheek.
DeleteGood to hear. You obviously have something in common with Bryans and all the other tail-waggers doing the Kitchen Cabinet's bidding i.e. having a tongue between the cheeks of the Big Boys who run the 'government' for the benefit of the banks and wealthy.
DeleteIf I am able in 2018 I will be standing as deputy in st Clements .
ReplyDeleteGood for you. Be sure to cover yourself in six inches of make up and talk boll**ks. Election guaranteed I would think.
DeleteDon't forget if you want to top the poll and become a Minister you will have to get plenty of media attention. You can only do this by lodging plenty of questions and PROPOSITIONS.
DeleteSush now! Don't tell anyone. I'm going to give you a tip to put you streets ahead of Minister Pinel.
DeleteWe have had dog licences for more than a generation.
There you go. You already know more than Jersey Lily Savage
No harm in a Deputy standing and saying they wish to be a Minister, sure Rod Bryans said in his election campaign that his goal was education.
ReplyDeleteReally? So he actually admitted that he needed an education? fair play.
DeleteAnonymous@17.37
DeleteObviously a goal Bryans has not yet reached. An absolute poltroon. Lose his seat next time for sure.
Lets face it The Constables staying in The States have been purposely put in the way, to stop the progress of Island wide voting and on line voting. Voting numbers will only get worse. This is just what the Ministers, assistant ministers and constables wanted.
ReplyDeleteDeputy Mezec and Senator Ferguson have got to get their heads together to make this sad situation a priority. Preferably before the next election.
If Sarah can help get Steve pallet out in our parish then her victory could be a good thing.
DeleteThe fact that the alleged (by her) main Establishment candidate Mary O'beef-Burger did so spectacularly badly should be looked at as a positive sign that change is slowly happening. As was also shown by Mr May's resounding defeat by Sam Mezec the Establishment can no longer rely on being able to stick up any old drongo for election and expect them to get in. Our island is at the tipping point economically after years of incompetent, greedy Tory's with their hands on the tiller (and in the till). Those who want a fairer society now just have to fight for it all the more energetically.
ReplyDeleteCan't agree with you. The deluded Mary is a fruitcake , you just need to see the reality disconnect in her policies. She was doing this for self promotion for her ludicrously overblown business, of which she is the sole employee.
DeleteTo be part of 'Franks lot' you would need to be invited not invite yourself. So she was not an Establishment candidate. That rosette falls elsewhere , a confirmation coming from a n appearance in photos of another's other half.
Mary was their girl. She introduced herself to Andrew Green as 'one of Frank's' back in 2014. She was also nominated by Frank's good buddy Pierres Horsefal in 2014. Good old PF even tried to bar other candidates from the Sastle Quay development and organised 'meet the candidates' parties for her and the equally useless James Baker. The establishment girl through anf through. Just a crap one who they didn't notice had been found out.
DeleteI thought John Young would have done better. A capable man. Just didn't seem to put himself across this time. Hope he still takes on the useless Murray Norton in 18 months.
ReplyDeletePosters and banners are required to be taken down during the week after the election. I am still seeing loads on the way to work though.
ReplyDeleteGreat day out at the Air Display yesterday. What a brilliant event. That Jersey's Economic Development Department doesn't back it properly is disgraceful. Well done to all involved
ReplyDeletehave to agree with that. I must say I do like the old World War II aircraft best. Any chance of a Stuka Dive Bomber next year and the Lancaster?
DeleteReform need to start forging links with other progressives now for 2018. They need to get Higgins on board, Simon Bree, Russell Labey and even Jackie Hilton. They also need a real leader to draw peoples attention. Not many obvious ones around but Big Trev would fit the bill if he is still around and willing. The establishment party are on the ropes if only we have the savvy to seize the opportunity. But work needs to start now.
ReplyDeleteGood point. They likely need to get people like Sarah herself on board too. Think that might be hard as the gulf between her core neo-liberalism and the likes of Southern's Socialism is just too great.
DeleteThe Establishment Party are on the ropes?
DeleteI'd love to know how your logic fits that one.
The same was said before the 2014 elections when results saw a swing to the right.
If the Left want to get motivated and move forward they need to build bridges with people in the States and avoid patronising them.
I agree with 14.07. By on the ropes I don't think he or she means about to collapse or disappear. I think the comment refers to no longer having any new, big hitters left and no longer being able to win no matter what rubbish they put forward.
DeleteThis is a fact we saw in 2014 with an Establishment buffoon not even being able to beat Nick Le Cornu after their bete noir Deputy Pitman was removed thanks to their on message court.
May and O'Keef-Burgher were not convincing candidates. They were beaten by a right-winger the party loathes in Ferguson and an ultra Left-winger comprehensively. How you can say business as usual I would like to see the logic behind.
There is nothing left in the barrel to borrow someone elses' analogy. What the Left have to do is garner good and only good candidates themselves for 2018. And that will also need working with others I absolutely agree.
Others who must surely realise by now that in their own interests they need to work with the Left just as much as the Left need to work with them.
The Establishment Party are still very much in power and they know this. Ferguson and Mezec topping the low turnout polls is a drop in their political ocean. Business as usual for them. What Ferguson and Mezec need to do is prioritize Electoral Reform and think seriously about getting the Jersey voting public more involved. Preferably before the next election.
ReplyDeleteSeeing a lot more comments online saying people did not vote because the line up of candidates in this by election were poor and moans about the Island referendum on Reform being ignored 3 years back which a lot forgot about.
ReplyDeleteSo that's the problem, de faye, burger, le cornu etc are weak candidates and the public feel ignored in the past. How will it be repaired, **** knows.
May was hardly great and like someone said Cheese-Burgher came across like a dizzy fruitcake. If these are Frank's boys and girls in 2016 then Mezec and Co really should be encouraged.
DeleteToo many of Reform's candidates last time were lightweights. But if they can get even half-a-dozen experienced people, new or old, for 2018 then I think they have a chance to make progress.
Can I be blunt here? I genuinely believe that my island is doomed. And the people to blame even more than the right wing spivs who dominate our government is we the people. Too many of us have allowed these bullying, incompetent and generally morally bankrupt imbeciles to run roughshod over us for decades. They let us down, betray us after every election and yet next time only a few candidates genuinely committed to making the island better and fairer for the majority get elected. Jersey deserves to sink. Horrible thing to say when you are born here but it is true. In answer to the questions posed I think the Establishment gang are facing the End of Days. But unless others work together and the public get off their lazy, cowardly behinds it will only be when we are in the gutter that change will be possible. The worst thing for me to admit, and I read this blog two or three times a week, is that I really don't care which it will be. My girlfriend and me both work so contribute. But we have had enough. Rather than waste it on a massively overpriced flat we are going travelling after Christmas for two whole years if the money holds out. If there is no Jersey to come back to afterwards so be it. The people most to be blame are the people. We have watched while Rome burned and our deluded Emperors fiddled. Literally. If people won't act or even vote they should shut the hell up.
ReplyDeleteJEP online headline "Firemen rescue cat" so all,is well in our society, nothing more serious to worry about than that!!
ReplyDeleteIn other news -
DeletePolice Chief drinks tea.
BBC Radio Jersey is no better. The first week of the new political year and not a mention of the first sitting on Tuesday. The DJs would rather play music and talk about trivial stuff. What ever happened to their Political Hour?
ReplyDeleteHaving checked the States Assembly website for 13th Sept Order Paper, the thing that stands out is the questions from an ex DJ ( 103) that could be instantly be answered by a telephone call to the education department..Anyone might think that he was getting worried about his post 2018 tenure. Presumably he has realised there are few cat owners in St.Saviours that care about him.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile the rumour that the Calais Jungle is being moved to Murray Nortons parking space at the airport is proven to be scurrilous,
Russel Labey however , does his bit well, so not all ex DJ s are parasitic , self-obsessed, self- aggrandising egoistic narcissists .
The 2018 election is a time for some clear thinking from Reform Jersey. In my honest opinion I think they should look to be making town a stronghold. Sam should run again in Number 2 district and build from there.
ReplyDeleteNow that the dust is settling on the By-Election some important facts can't be overlooked. Yes, Reform did brilliantly but this was also achieved on the back of the lowest by-election turnout since the war. The general election will be different, especially the Senatorial election.
Why possibly lose Sam when there is absolutely no need to do so. Its about building the numbers up.
I really hope that Jon Young goes against that waste of space Norton and even Duhamel comes back against McLinton.
its always been a numbers game
Reform Jersey will need much stronger candidates than in 2014 to make any ground and I fear that if Sam Mezec does only go for Deputy in 2018 it will probably send the wrong message out.
DeleteHe must show strength and determination in his own ability to be a Senator and after coming so close voters will expect him to stand on an Island Wide Mandate again.
There are 8 places up for grabs so surely he can get one of them?
Rico you are right about turning St helier in to a stronghold. You probably should have said - again. Because it was back before Southern destroyed the JDA.
DeleteThe whole of Number Two was JDA. In Number One we had Trevor Pitman, who I think was JDA Chairman, as well as Martin and Le Claire. Bottlers from the JDA fight for sure but still Left-leaning Progressives. In St Helier 3 & 4 we had Mike Higgins and even Jackie Hilton who wasn't all bad.
The Establishment barely got a look in in St Helier then and but for Southern the next step would have surely been to try and get the remaining couple of seat. The useless Ben Fox was due to retire after his dubious one vote 2008 election win from another Left progressive.
That must be Reform's strategy now. As you say why should Sam Mezec risk everything just for making a point and getting the title of Senator?
Personally I have always felt that individuals like Monty and Trevor Pitman would almost certainly be able to take 8th, 7th or even 6th place in a Senatorial election. But it is still a risk and to me a risk not worth taking when people have secure seats already.
The key as somebody says is to get more credible and if possible well known candidates willing to stand for Reform. Do this and more progress will be made.
There is only one way to find out. Its a very big decision. But in 2yrs time will anyone be bothered if he stayed at Deputy. I would imagine that the 8 existing would all stand again. Who is the weakest standing Senator. Ssm will need to find a further 6,000 votes.
ReplyDeleteYou are sounding like you don't think Sam can do it.
DeleteA Jersey Senator is not the be all and end all, look at Zoe Cameron. To have the talent and enthusiasm is what is needed to make change, look at Sam Mezec.
DeleteBig difference.
DeleteThe Island Wide Mandate shows that the whole Island approves of your politics.
No it doesn't. Ferguson is now a Senator on 3.600 votes. Not even 4% of the population. There has never been a Senator who could say the whole island supports them.
DeleteThe Island wide mandate shows that a small percentage of the voters have heard of you. Nothing more nothing less.
ReplyDeleteRico, Sam said himself during the by election that the Island Wide Mandate would see wider approval of Reform Jersey's politics so I am not sure why you keep down playing the position of Senator.
DeleteIt's a tougher position to obtain because you need the whole Island liking you, and that's Sam's ultimate goal surely. States Members who stay in the lessor role of Deputy at every election may as well admit their popularity is limited.
Why do we have Deputies acting as Ministers instead of Senators?
ReplyDeleteWhat the Island might think bears no resemblance to what the chamber might think. Ask Zoe Cameron.
Ask Sam, he stood for Senator.
DeleteIts like Jerry saying "Ask the dogs,Sandra"
DeleteNo idea why you dislike the idea of Sam standing on the Island Wide Mandate again when he performed so well at all the Hustings. He is better than the position of Deputy and a lot of this Reform Jersey Policies are for the whole Island so let him get on with it Rico and stop being negative.
Delete'Better than the position of Deputy'? Listen to yourself. Some of the best politicians in Jersey have been lowly Deputies. Consider Jersey's finest ever politician for example, Norman Le Brocq. Would never have gotten elected as a Senator. Then ponder just a handful of the huge selection of utter prunes who have stormed in as Senators. Philip 'Paedo protector' Bailhache. Philip 'Where has the money gone?' Ozouf. Paul 'I don't know why I'm here' Routier. Ben 'Only got elected thanks to my pa' Shenton. Right up to the useless, silent Zoe Cameron. I suspect you just want Sam Mezec to run the greater risk of losing his seat away from the constituents who know he has worked hard for them.
DeleteI see Ben 'Never in the States' Shenton is still pushing for poor people to be excluded from standing for election via his chums at the JEP.
ReplyDeleteI would rather see people who rip off the taxpayers by non-attendance at the States after roll call, generally pushing off to their businesses which I invariably need the States salary to prop up, banned from standing for ten years.
In Shenton's case we all know he would lose his own deposit were he not able to milk his father's name and reputation for votes. This populist hater of the working class makes my blood boil.
An excellent response to Shenton's shenanigans. Who is this no hoper
DeleteThe JEP pole has Ben's suggestion way ahead.
DeleteSam getting elected as Senator would make no difference to anything. Unfortunately for me I have studied, listened and attended enough states sittings to know this. I think Sam is an excellent politician and would be gutted to lose him from the states for no reason.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Sam and Sarah is that they have made a lot of pledges which many do not believe they will be able to deliver on.
DeleteSarah thinks she can get rid of 0-10 and Sam thinks he can stop job cuts and stop cuts to teachers pay amongst other things. Over the next 18 months as they are handily in the States we can see how far they get with these promises and if anything it may even haunt them in 2018.
But at least trying get rid of damaging policies and failing is a positive set against going along with a flow you know to be wrong. Neo-liberalism is all about greed and helping the greedy rich grow richer at the expense of others. The political doctrine of the economic dinosaur.
DeleteA good boost for Reform would be to have some sitting States Members defect to the party.
ReplyDeleteHow about Mike Higgins? He'd have nothing to lose and could help boost their profile before the election.
For gods sake Rico, let Sam Mezec be.
DeleteYou're not his manager.
Mike Higgins announced that this was his last term in office and Southern said the same in 2014.
DeleteI know I'm not but who is? Lol
DeleteListening to the States this morning and the Treasury Minister has an answer for everything.
ReplyDeleteAccept cuts for future spending blah blah blah blah, no acknowledgement of income going down in real terms, and that Pinel woman is completely soulless and couldn't give a toss if more people need food banks.
They don't care about the less well off in Jersey, they are an irritating burden for them and should all work like the Pinel woman says.
Well then do something
ReplyDeleteYes. Get Stuart back. Get Trevor back. This States are either gutless or in on the con. How come we don't hear any calls for a bit of austerity on the Bailiff's huge salary? What I would give for a 10% pay increase.
DeleteWho decides these huge pay hikes for Crown Officers?
DeleteCan anyone tell me how I go about finding out what date an individual gave evidence to the Care Inquiry? I have been on their site but I don't find it very easy.
ReplyDeleteIs there a list anywhere of the order witnesses gave evidence that I can look up.
I am interested in reading the statements of police officers Barry Feudemer and Ant Cornelissen. Might have spelt their names wrong.
Day 113 2nd December 2015 Barry Faudemer, Day 102 20 October 2015 Anton Cornellissen
ReplyDeleteI would like to see Montfort Tardier replace Ian Gorst as Chief Minister.
ReplyDelete"I would like to see Montfort Tardier replace Ian Gorst as Chief Minister."
ReplyDeleteHe will have to get into the COM first as a Minister and work his way up like Gorst did.
Has Montfort ever been an assistant Minister/Minister?
Montfort Tadier is wasting his time in the States.
DeleteHe's another who repeats the same promises at every election when knowingly unable to deliver anything.
It's time for a Left wing reality check because the current set-up is allowing the COM to do what it likes whenever it likes and everybody has to face it.
@09:24
DeleteMontfort Tadier is a social democrat, rather than being "left wing" as such.
Surely you are wasting everybody's time unless you are able to make constructive suggestions.
Would you rather that the island's current band of Religious-Conservatives, Neo-Conservatives and Neo-Fascists had entirely their own crew?
Constructive suggestions?
DeleteHere we have a Deputy who has been in the States for 8 years and this Island has got worse during that time because he cannot stop the train and neither can Southern. People need to stop pretending the next election is going to see a change because we hear this every 3 years and if the same people stand with the same agendas and fake promises then nothing will ever change because they are already owned in there.
We need new people, a new direction and Standees should stop telling voters lies at elections about being able to stop things when they can't.
OMFG
DeleteSomeone else actually gets it. There is hope.
Indeed, We need new people.
DeleteAre you going to stand, or just undermine those who do?
Politics in a company town can be one sided and depressing.
Opposition members need to either be team players or have superhuman determination like Pitman, Syvret, Higgins etc?
Are you a team player or are you superhuman?
Ok, names for new parties for 2018.
DeleteMy party will be called:
"Vote the Name vote the Same"
We promise not to listen
We promise not to lodge any questions.
We promise not to lodge any propositions
We promise to always vote with the executive.
We promise to show disdain towards any states member with a moral and social conscious.
And get we have given you the most honest manifesto you could read.
"Vote the name Vote the Same"
Power of 51
DeleteYou sound remarkably like someone now called Zdigger Barnes. They say the same thing and misuse standee as well.
Who could this be?
"We promise not to lodge any questions."
DeleteForget questions, they never get anywhere and propositions can be doomed solely by the name of the Deputy putting it to the Assembly.
So basically give up and just take the money. Questions and propositions can at least keep up the drip-drip to eventually wear through the wall.
DeleteThey can expose or just raise issues that would otherwise never ever see the light of day just as the Establishment want it.
Giving up and copping out does nothing and worse it is an insult to the people who voted for you.
You only have to look back at Nick Le Cornu's brief tenure in the States. While campaigning he had lots of good things to say and often even said them well. Once elected he joined the Trappist Monk Society. And where is he now?
People have to try even if they know they won't see the changes in their career time or even life time. That is why the Higgins, Pitmans, Syvrets and Hills of this world deserve so much respect. Superhuman they were if only in resolve and durability.
The people let them down and are still doing it today.
But as Brian Clough used to say 'It only takes one kick to score a goal and change the whole game'.
Can I kick Ozouf please? And Bailhache. And Gorst. And..........
DeleteDon't forget Pinel! Or are "ladies" excluded from a well-earned boot up the posterior?
DeleteYou are really stretching the term lady are you not?
DeletePinel is one who WILL lose her seat in 2018 no matter what else happens. Uncaring, arrogant and useless.
DeleteAgreed - there is no way she should keep it. Problem is, how much moredamae can she do towards the vulnerable before the 2018 elections?
DeleteApologies - meant more damage!
DeleteJill. Pinel was given the job to do damage to working people, the elderly and the poor. A horrible person that even makes Gorst look like he cares.
DeleteWait till 2018, speculating too early as to whats gonna happen and BREXIT may be the final nail in the coffin.

ReplyDeleteChristian May says he might not stand again after being hammered twice. No loss there then.
ReplyDeleteA good way forward on at least a start on changing our present purely establishment and bias government would be to get Lord Carswel back next month to repeat what he has been saying for a decade. Oh no, how convenient, he can't make it.
ReplyDeleteIt is time - past time - Carswell came back. They ought to re-animate Clothier too and get him to ask why the hell did you make such a mess of my carefully thought out reforms?
DeleteToo true Stuffy. Christian May certainly didn't live up to my expectations. The Establishment barrel seems to have been scraped right through to the ground. O'Keef-Cheese-Burgher would not even have made it in to the Establishment barrel in days of yore. I will be voting Mezec next time. Does need a decent parliamentarian haircut though. The porridge bowl cut might even have cost him those 131 votes from people who mistook him for a Puritan or even Oliver Cromwell. The boy did very well though didn't he.
ReplyDeleteMinister Pinel or should that be don't do as I do, do as I say. This cold hearted excuse for a human being and as Minister for Social Security took the easy road at 'cost cutting' and hit the most vulnerable in this Island THE PENSIONERS. What so many do not know is that the Ministers Husband as (then) hard honcho at the Post Office, year on year (apart from his massive salary) huge bonuses based on 'profits' made by JP on the Low Value Goods industry, he did sweet FA to earn these bonuses but he sure as hell took them. Pity she did not see fit to tell him to pay them back to the pensioners, next election?? smells like toast burning.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on Pinel. Horrible, uncaring woman. I don't recall her ever asking a single question or bringing a single proposition on behalf of her constituents before she was given a position she is evidently far too lacking in intellect to hold.
DeletePinel is a camp guard obeying orders.
ReplyDeleteDoes any reader know a good shrink please? I keep writing the same old crap on the filthy rag on line pages day after day, year after year. I am obsessed with attacking left-wing politics. Please help. I've been doing this for 8 years now!
ReplyDeletePeople have noticed mate. You need a life not just a shrink.
DeleteSorry, but freedom of speech is a right for all.
DeletePeople have a right to voice opinions no matter what part of the political spectrum they are on and I attack left-wing ideas sometimes as well as right-wing views.
Harassing and stalking isn't a right and in a properly policed jurisdiction this would not be allowed to happen so I am with anonymous@16.26. I think what makes DiggerBarnes so pitiful is that everyone knows who he is but he still isn't brave enough to post his obsessive abuse under his own name.
DeleteI've read the material in question and they are political views so maybe people are just trying to gag him.
DeleteReally Jon? You have read the repetitive, childishly inane comments that appear on every story remotely to do with a progressive States member? Funny how you knew where to look me old mucker? Surprised that your defence of your own comments even being allowed on a proper blog like this. The long autumn nights are really going to fly by in your gaff aren't they?
DeleteTo start with, I am not Jon, Maureen, Digger, Troll or any other stupid name you want to give me.
DeleteI read all the JEP comments and if people do not care for States members left/right/green/liberal/whatever then why stop them?
Everybody has the right to political opinions and they should be allowed to air them without hindrance unless you want people censored which is wrong.
Don't bother reading the JEP then because whoever is writing stuff is obviously getting to you.
ReplyDeleteIf the 'stuff' that this particular person was writing was part of constructive debate or comment there would not be a problem. It is just boring, uninteresting drivel time after time (and not even intelligent drive at that), and serves no purpose at all.
DeleteJudging by the paper's sales now regularly being down in four figures from what one of their reporters was telling me a couple of months back a lot of people are taking your advice Jon. Oops, I meant Digger obviously.
DeleteI don't think very much of Deputy Judy Martin anymore since her non-performance as Assistant Minister with responsibility for children. However I think her proposition calling for a referendum on whether to scrap ministerial government or not is a good one. Probably got an eye on the election in eighteen months because she doesn't do much proposition-wise either I concede. Good subject for a gust blog perhaps? Maybe using someone like constitutional expert Mike Dun?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mandy 110% but it should be said Digger Barnes on the JEP web pages is a fake account used by two people not one. Jon and his equally pathetic hater Maureen. You can often spot the cross-over in responses.
ReplyDeleteBut I shouldn't worry too much. Anyone who tries to talk up a 51 vote electoral embarrassment is hardly likely to be taken seriously by anyone.
I mean to say just look at the attacks on Montfort Tadier for being involved in trying to develop a family fun day on St. Brelades beach. Why would any normal person want to attack someone for a positive initiative like that?
It saddens me to read people attempting to silence posters on the JEP website.
DeleteIf the same people were attacking the likes of Ian Gorst or Philip Ozouf I wonder whether the same disdain would be echoed on here.
But that is the point isn't it Diggsy - you don't get people posting abusive garbage about Gorst or Ozouf on the JEP or here. If people criticise it is about politics. Not just because they are right-wingers.
DeleteComments about a politicians policies are fine I believe everyone would say. But how can anyone justify for instance old Diggsy JSH's abuse of the Pitmans, Stuart Syvret or even Graham Power?
The JEP obviously allow JSH do do this because they are to collude with such abuse. But we don't wan't that here.
Time for a new post and back to normal Troll Free Zone policing Voice!
A referendum on Ministerial government would be one of only about two subjects worth having a referendum on. The other would be about getting rid of the bailiff's dual role. Okay, so really it should just be scraped by the States but we know most don't have the gonads to do it without public say so.
ReplyDeleteIs it correct that Digger has unsuccessfully tried to obtain Reform Jersey emails via a Freedom of Information request? This was mentioned in a comment on the Filthy Rag's on line pages. If Dep Mezc is reading this maybe he can advise us?
ReplyDeleteWhat about a new theme for a blog?
ReplyDeleteName your six most likely sitting politicians to lose their seats in 2018?
Or maybe name your six most likely new or former politicians to get elected in 2018?
Here's my six to go to get the ball rolling.
1: Murray Norton
2: Peter Mac
3: Graham Truscott (I think he is called Graham? He never speaks.
4: Susie Pinel
5: Philip Ozouf
6:Scott Wickenden
