Christian May. The Inbetweener(s).

Christian May.

After viewing all election hustings so far during this Senatorial by election, I have noticed that Christian May could have, what looks to be, "involuntary arm movement." I have witnessed this (involuntary arm movement) before but couldn't think where.

Christian claims not to be a part of "The Establishment" and also claims he is not anti-establishment. So I thought; "what could he be?" Then it came to me................ Being a fan of the Inbetweeners TV programme, I realised that he's an Inbetweener, which also reminded me of where I had seen that involuntary arm movement before. It was on an episode of the Inbetweeners. (Series 3 episode 2)
In a very short (35 second) video clip (below) we have squeezed in four separate Hustings Meetings to demonstrate this.

The video below is published in the spirit of light-hearted fun in an attempt to inject a little humour into the political process/By-Election which can get quite ugly at times. In this regard we will NOT be publishing any negative comments against any of the candidates in this Blog Posting.

If you wish to leave a comment supporting your favoured candidate they are:

Alvin Aaron.

Guy De Faye.

Mike Dun.

Sarah Ferguson.

Nick Le Cornu.

Christian May.

Sam Mezec.

Stevie Ocean.

Mary O’Keeffe-Burgher.

Hugh Raymond.

John Young.

All candidates opening speeches (from St. Clement Hustings) can be viewed HERE. Not forgetting you can also vote for your preferred candidate on the poll situated at the left hand-side of this page.

  1. "Ambulance or Mummy"? Sounds what Jersey needs as our island's soul (and economy) is surely stuck in A & E.

But a nice bit of fun and I am sure Christian will take it in good spirit.

  2. Being an Inbetweeners fan too I think we all know that Senator Ozouf is really Jay in disguise. Nobody else could exaggerate like that!

  6. I see in the Filthy Rag that former Senator Ben Shenton, the man with the worst attendance record in States history, is calling for a deposit scheme so that only rich, lazy, stupid people can afford to stand for election. Surely a more urgent need is a system to impose huge fines and ultimately exclusion of States Members who take the taxpayers' money but push off to their day job after the register at sittings?

    1. Shenton was an arrogant disgrace in the States. Who can forget his shameful attacks on Lenny Harper. A truly useless politician who only got elected off his father's reputation.

    2. The damage Shenton and his sidekick Jimmy Perchard did to both the Health service and the abuse victims with their antics was immense and unforgivable. You need to look no further than Family X.

    3. Former Deputy T Pitman famously outed Shenton for the lazy hypocrite he is/was a few years back in the States. Okay so Ben Gone-by-Ten wasn't the only one with a lousy attendance record. But he was the only one making speeches about value for money from politicians only to then bog off to his private business while we mug taxpayers footed the bill. Bet he'll be trying to make a comeback in 2018 with his business allegedly not doing great. Useless. Please move to the Bahamas Ben.

I know this is slightly off subject but I hope your readers will be trying to go along to the Jersey Air Display. What a brilliant job Deputy Michael Higgins does in running it for our island every year.

Mr Higgins is the best Deputy in St Helier No3/4 by a mile and it would have been great to see him run for Senator. A real man of the people and so hard working. The polar opposite of former Senator Ben Shenton mentioned above.

Hopefully he will be joined in the States after tomorrow by either Mike Dun or young Samuel Mezec who I also admire.

  14. @13.51 is Talking of Ben Shenton signing in then walking out, how about living in London most of the time, and how about loyalty to your island and the ninty day tax rule, is he now deemed an English resident for tax purposes ? Is his wage of over £40,000 taxed by the UK inland revenue and paid by Jersey.

Everyone is allowed to have a close loving partner, but how many elected politicians in the world receive tax funded flights each and every week, to spend most of the week to be with their partner who happens to live in London. It is common knowledge that Senator Philip Ozouf's present partner resides in London.

How many States sittings and debates has he missed ?

Imagine a politician living in Westminister and and flying everyweek to Jersey to stay with their loved one and still claim to look after business at home including their constituents, there would be a national outcry. Philip Ozouf is taking the p**s and a weak Chief Minister and his cronies allow this misappropriation of public funds, and abuse while in public office, while raising taxes and cutting services.

At least B. Shenton was on island for the Majority of time and contactable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Totally agree about the Ozouf situation. But...

Does anyone know exactly how much time he spends on island or in London precisely. Like it or not if he is here most of the week then just departs for the weekend, back again Monday loathe his politics and incompetence as | do I would have to say this is still acceptable.

As for Ben Shenton his behaviour in the States was an insult to all. I recall him coming top of the missed vote league monitored by the admittedly equally useless Jeremy Macon. More than 150 missed votes in just one year if my memory is what it used to be.

Chatting about this the other day at work my line manager, who till a year ago used to have the radion throughout every States debate (I know, |I know we ought to take him to an employment tribunal for making us suffer!) reckons Shenton missed more than 600 votes in his one period as a Senator.

If that is true then to me that really is taking the p*ss. He really should stay in his private sector box now and keep his mouth shut. Better still maybe, go and live with his chum Ozouf in London?

The very amateur chairman Malcolm Ferey got correctly slapped down towards the end ( 1hr.48 in ) when he decided on chairmans privilege what ever that is to ask his own question ? It is the public that needs questions answered thats why you are there.

An audience member refused to obey the chairmans privilege ploy refusing to sit down and approached the panel. The chairman gave in and the man asked his question and Eddie Noel and Constable Crowcroft got slammed. Clearly a feeling of anger in the room. Nice guy Stevie Ocean - and acts as mad as a barrel of frogs. John Young appeared the strongest Sam Meznec was excellent and Ferguson great and hopefully she will go for election next time.

  17. I think that a comment from your previous blog bears repeating.

"Agree with the above poster, Ferguson, Young or Sam would be a satisfactory result, but remember the last election, it was between Ferguson and Ozouf, in the recount Ozouf found that he had over two hundred votes more. Some people may view that as strange ?

Desperate times need desperate measures to keep the balance of power.

If the powers that be, can transfer multi million pound publicly owned assets to arms length groups of their friends, ex politicians, ex civil servants and yes men to do with as they wish the under a cloak of secrecy call it all commercially sensitive therefore not in the publics interest to know, messing with an election is a piece of cake.

Is the first citizen, the Bailiff our head judge and head of the judiciary going to stand up and say democracy is becoming a distant memory on Jersey ? Of course not when they have awarded him a ten percent increase on his remuneration package every year for the last five years. He now gets £337,000 to not get involved.

More than twice the pay packet of the UK prime minister.

Is this why he removed the covenant in the Royal court allowing Eddie Noel to charge St Helier residents for waste disposal ? Bit of a ramble but Ferguson and Young have the experiance and backbone to try and get answers out of these self interested some say corrupt ars***s"

Now is that poster REALLY SUGGESTING that these pillars of our community would rig a couple of hundred votes to get their man in under the wire?

That is almost as rediculous as suggesting that they would allow/facilitate or cover up decades of child abuse!

  36. That's a result if Sarah Ferguson continues to avoid the establishment pimps

Sam Mezec has confirmed himself as a realistic (near certain even) Senatorial candidate in 2018

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hope Rico points out on the BBC that the most revealing points emerging from this result is that the annointed Establishment candidate(s) no longer won.

Okay so the Leftist candidate did not quite top the poll but he thrashed both Establishment candidates by big margins.

The public (those who bothered to vote) simply went for that other great Jersey Way fallacy 'the experienced, safe pair of hands' Nothing against Sarah Ferguson here either. Whatever her right wing politics generally she is her own woman.

Much as I can't stand Geoff Southern's posturing this result is a positive one for the Left and indication that big progress could be made if they can unearth a few candidates of a Trevor Pitman quality. In my view quality candidates for the Left is the key to everything now.

The only true negative for the Left is that they still could not get nearly enough of the St. Helier voters out to vote because just a few percent more would have seen Sam Mezec on the Senatorial benches.

Actually but for other distractions like Mr Le Cornu taking crucial but priceless votes Sam might have got their regardless.

A lot for Prof Adrian Lee to think about.

    1. I hope Nick Le Cornu realises he has killed any remote chance of a comeback in St Helier? The votes wasted on him were so important. A Splitter he most certainly is and he cost Sam dear. He should hang up his rosette and do us all a favour. 69 votes in the whole of St Helier shows what a joke figure he has made himself.

      Delete
    2. Sam lost by just 131 votes. Most blame must go down to the St Helier residents who could not be bothered to vote as others have pointed out. But Nick getting just 139 votes total also should not be overlooked.

He had no chance but could not resist standing. Is this delusion or just loving being up there on a hustings? I really do not know.

But it is true that those 139 votes which were so meaningless for Nick would have been huge for Sam. Unfortunately I think Nick is now not just going to be loathed by the right but also by the left.

      Only himself to blame. Again.

  39. "An abysmal turnout, a lack of factual background material available to the public on the candidates and their past voting and political records and a situation not helped by an outdated first past the post election system.

The outcome. We elected a senator who said on radio she'd have supported UKIP at the last UK election, is sceptical to put it mildly on climate change, and opposes most renewable energy options. Of course none of that was mentioned on her election leaflet. She did talk and write about opposing new taxes/charges, but forget to mention she voted for GST and against exemptions when she had the power to do so in the States. Maybe she has changed her mind, we might have known had there been anything like debate in the election and detailed reporting in the press on issues rather than caricatures and snide observation on husting attendance.

This isn't working, but how to change. It isn't arguing about electoral change and constitution . It isn't angry letters to the JEP (though that might help you feel better), it is to take back the communications between the activists and the public, not let intermediaries and commercial interests have a stranglehold . Online helps a little with that, but not enough - it needs activists on streets year round connecting with people face to face , door to door. Very old fashioned, very effective, almost impossible on any meaningful scale without structure and organisation and resources.
    Don't get mad, get active!"

  40. Grassroots activism has always been the key to turning things around in this brain-washed island. The thing I loved about the JDA was suddenly here was a group visible every week with a stall in town, talking to people about the issues, knocking on doors. It was like a throwback to decades ago and for a couple of years flourished. The JDA could have grown and likely would have but for the huge dislike of Deputy Southern's manner and the early chickening out of Judy Martin. They should reform it. Perhaps even better reform the old JDM from when I was a much younger man.

  41. After Christian May's claimed procession to the Senatorial benches imploded, being exposed as a big, damp squib where presentation over content was the order of the day your highlighting of "Ambulance or Mummy" seems pretty uncanny.

    6. Not my comment. But for my two p's worth May will get elected eventually though not as a Senator. As others have astutely remarked what is very telling is the May and Cheese-Burgher, the Establishment candidates, got hammered by someone independent of them. sadly that independent was not a progressive like Sam but still hugely significant. From what I am hearing today in my own circles the Establishment are somewhat shocked. The progressives now need to build on this over the next two years by (somehow) getting other well known, progressive leaners to work with them. Join would be even better. But give Mezec his due. he has a lot to do in my eyes to become as good as some of the ex-States members who get talked about on here. But the boy did well. Very well. Who knows. 53. Lets face it The Constables staying in The States have been purposely put in the way, to stop the progress of Island wide voting and on line voting. Voting numbers will only get worse. This is just what the Ministers, assistant ministers and constables wanted.
Deputy Mezec and Senator Ferguson have got to get their heads together to make this sad situation a priority. Preferably before the next election.

  54. The fact that the alleged (by her) main Establishment candidate Mary O'beef-Burger did so spectacularly badly should be looked at as a positive sign that change is slowly happening. As was also shown by Mr May's resounding defeat by Sam Mezec the Establishment can no longer rely on being able to stick up any old drongo for election and expect them to get in. Our island is at the tipping point economically after years of incompetent, greedy Tory's with their hands on the tiller (and in the till). Those who want a fairer society now just have to fight for it all the more energetically.

To be part of 'Franks lot' you would need to be invited not invite yourself. So she was not an Establishment candidate. That rosette falls elsewhere , a confirmation coming from a n appearance in photos of another's other half.

    2. Mary was their girl. She introduced herself to Andrew Green as 'one of Frank's' back in 2014. She was also nominated by Frank's good buddy Pierres Horsefal in 2014. Good old PF even tried to bar other candidates from the Sastle Quay development and organised 'meet the candidates' parties for her and the equally useless James Baker. The establishment girl through anf through. Just a crap one who they didn't notice had been found out.

They also need a real leader to draw peoples attention. Not many obvious ones around but Big Trev would fit the bill if he is still around and willing. I'd love to know how your logic fits that one.
The same was said before the 2014 elections when results saw a swing to the right.
If the Left want to get motivated and move forward they need to build bridges with people in the States and avoid patronising them.

    3. I agree with 14.07. By on the ropes I don't think he or she means about to collapse or disappear. I think the comment refers to no longer having any new, big hitters left and no longer being able to win no matter what rubbish they put forward.

This is a fact we saw in 2014 with an Establishment buffoon not even being able to beat Nick Le Cornu after their bete noir Deputy Pitman was removed thanks to their on message court.

May and O'Keef-Burgher were not convincing candidates. They were beaten by a right-winger the party loathes in Ferguson and an ultra Left-winger comprehensively. How you can say business as usual I would like to see the logic behind.

There is nothing left in the barrel to borrow someone elses' analogy. What the Left have to do is garner good and only good candidates themselves for 2018. And that will also need working with others I absolutely agree.

Others who must surely realise by now that in their own interests they need to work with the Left just as much as the Left need to work with them.

  59. The Establishment Party are still very much in power and they know this. Ferguson and Mezec topping the low turnout polls is a drop in their political ocean. Business as usual for them. What Ferguson and Mezec need to do is prioritize Electoral Reform and think seriously about getting the Jersey voting public more involved. Preferably before the next election.

  61. Can I be blunt here? I genuinely believe that my island is doomed. And the people to blame even more than the right wing spivs who dominate our government is we the people. Too many of us have allowed these bullying, incompetent and generally morally bankrupt imbeciles to run roughshod over us for decades. They let us down, betray us after every election and yet next time only a few candidates genuinely committed to making the island better and fairer for the majority get elected. Jersey deserves to sink. Horrible thing to say when you are born here but it is true. In answer to the questions posed I think the Establishment gang are facing the End of Days. But unless others work together and the public get off their lazy, cowardly behinds it will only be when we are in the gutter that change will be possible. The worst thing for me to admit, and I read this blog two or three times a week, is that I really don't care which it will be. My girlfriend and me both work so contribute. But we have had enough. Rather than waste it on a massively overpriced flat we are going travelling after Christmas for two whole years if the money holds out. If there is no Jersey to come back to afterwards so be it. The people most to be blame are the people. We have watched while Rome burned and our deluded Emperors fiddled. Literally. If people won't act or even vote they should shut the hell up.

  65. The 2018 election is a time for some clear thinking from Reform Jersey. In my honest opinion I think they should look to be making town a stronghold. Sam should run again in Number 2 district and build from there.

Now that the dust is settling on the By-Election some important facts can't be overlooked. Yes, Reform did brilliantly but this was also achieved on the back of the lowest by-election turnout since the war. The general election will be different, especially the Senatorial election.

Why possibly lose Sam when there is absolutely no need to do so. Its about building the numbers up.

    1. Reform Jersey will need much stronger candidates than in 2014 to make any ground and I fear that if Sam Mezec does only go for Deputy in 2018 it will probably send the wrong message out.

He must show strength and determination in his own ability to be a Senator and after coming so close voters will expect him to stand on an Island Wide Mandate again.

There are 8 places up for grabs so surely he can get one of them?

      Delete
    2. Rico you are right about turning St helier in to a stronghold. You probably should have said - again. Because it was back before Southern destroyed the JDA.

The whole of Number Two was JDA. In Number One we had Trevor Pitman, who I think was JDA Chairman, as well as Martin and Le Claire. Bottlers from the JDA fight for sure but still Left-leaning Progressives. In St Helier 3 & 4 we had Mike Higgins and even Jackie Hilton who wasn't all bad.

The Establishment barely got a look in in St Helier then and but for Southern the next step would have surely been to try and get the remaining couple of seat. The useless Ben Fox was due to retire after his dubious one vote 2008 election win from another Left progressive.

That must be Reform's strategy now. As you say why should Sam Mezec risk everything just for making a point and getting the title of Senator?

Personally I have always felt that individuals like Monty and Trevor Pitman would almost certainly be able to take 8th, 7th or even 6th place in a Senatorial election. But it is still a risk and to me a risk not worth taking when people have secure seats already.

The key as somebody says is to get more credible and if possible well known candidates willing to stand for Reform. Do this and more progress will be made.

Would never have gotten elected as a Senator. Then ponder just a handful of the huge selection of utter prunes who have stormed in as Senators. Philip 'Paedo protector' Bailhache. Philip 'Where has the money gone?' Ozouf. Paul 'I don't know why I'm here' Routier. Ben 'Only got elected thanks to my pa' Shenton. Right up to the useless, silent Zoe Cameron. I suspect you just want Sam Mezec to run the greater risk of losing his seat away from the constituents who know he has worked hard for them.
