Abraham Gorst.

Abraham Gorst.

On 20th June 2017 our heroic Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, faced a Vote of No Confidence tabled (but possibly not authored) by St. John Constable Chris Taylor. The proposition listed a number of failings/concerns the proposer (or its author) had against Senator Gorst and sought to convince the rest of the Assembly that it was time to relieve Senator Gorst of his role as Chief Minister. Something Team Voice warned to be careful who/what you wish for. Thankfully (because the alternative was unthinkable) Senator Gorst comfortably survived the vote and was not unseated.

We say; "comfortably" because going into the debate he did not have the support he had at the end of the debate, and we argue that this is for one reason and one reason only.

What we learned from one particular speech, during the debate is the horrendous ordeals, life tragedies, to include assassination attempts, mental breakdowns, the tragic death of his childhood sweetheart, bankruptcy, and a war (what's going on out at St. Ouens?) that Senator Gorst has had to overcome in order to finally get elected (after many unsuccessful attempts) not only as a legislator but Chief Minister (or president) of Jersey. The inspiring part of this triumph against adversity is the humility displayed by Chief Minister Gorst who has NEVER once complained, or even mentioned, the struggles he has had to overcome in order to get to where he is.

Deputy Rod Bryans

Below is a shortened/edited recording of what we believe is the speech that saved Senator Gorst's neck. The speech delivered by Education Minister Rod Bryans, we are sure, will go down in the annuls of Jersey political history as the most inspirational speech ever spoken in the Jersey Parliament. The speech that saved the political career of possibly the most courageous, determined, leader Jersey has ever seen or is likely to see.

The research Deputy Bryan's must have undertaken in order to draw all the parallels between our Chief Minister, and that of former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, must be commended. It would have been exhaustive work, not only researching all the parallels, but collating them in such an inspirational, and informative speech, that would persuade sworn Gorst enemies to vote in favour of him keeping his position as Jersey's leader. Deputy Rod Bryans' speech should be equally celebrated as the achievements of Senator Gorst/Lincoln. We have a new found respect for the Deputy and are reassured that the education of Jersey's children is in his hands. Children for decades to come will be talking about "that speech." The "Abraham Gorst" speech will be quoted by political commentators, speech writers/analysts, politicians, and historians for decades also.

We know how humble Senator Gorst is and feel sure that he will be thinking to himself "what the hell was Bryans thinking of giving that bl--dy Abraham Gorst speech?" Or "WTF possessed him to go on about assassination attempts, mental breakdowns and Bankruptcy and the rest of that gumph?" Well Chief Minister, he did, it almost certainly saved your political career and you should be as proud of that speech as no doubt Deputy Bryans is. You should feel proud to have a Minister on your team of such calibre and of un-questioning devotion to you.

The full (inspirational) speech can be viewed HERE. It will only be available for 6 months online so we hope our shortened/edited version will go some way in preserving this momentous occasion in the annuls of Jersey political history.

    1. If this is the edited version heaven help those who had to hear the whole thing. Bryans could bore the hind legs off a centipede. He is DULL, DULL, DULL with a capital Duh!

  2. What is this , story corner ? Misguided speech imo - Gorst is a liar , a criminal , and acts in the name and benefit of tyrants everyday of the week. In the next few weeks his fake public facing persona is going to come down in a crash of biblical proportions and he will finally be exposed for what he is . I might go and see Rodney and show him a few pieces of evidence ....maybe he will retract his speech.

  3. All we need now is for Senator Bailhache to give a speech comparing Deputy Lewis to Jesus to keep the ball rolling.

  4. I used to think Trevor and Stuart had made the best two speeches of all time highlighting all the corruption in the Jersey Way.

But how wrong I was! Deputy Rod Bryans may well be an utterly useless numpty who has done nothing for the people of Jersey in his six years in office. But so what?

This speech certainly is the greatest of all time.

Sorry Trev and Stuart. Your speeches may have been based on facts but Bilbo Bryans has opened our eyes to the crushing hardship our people's hero Gorst had to face on the way to the top job but never once talkaed about.

And to think Bryans never even went in to detail but Gorst's other heroic hardships as capatured in the true life documentary Abraham Lincoln Gorst - vampire slayer. Rent it now and marvel at the boss' bravery against the forces of Bailhache darkness.

    1. Absolutely agree. He may have been up all night working on this, but 99% of what Bryans said appears to be totally irrelevant

  6. I'm guessing that was a pitch for the next ministerial vacancy. He and Ann Pryke could make a killing on the after dinner speaking circuit.

...the audience would die of boredom.

    1. Rod Bryans is that most dangerous of political beasts. A wannabee intellectual too dim to know he is really a total wally. Can it really be true that this pretentious nit-wit believes that he could be a contender for the next Chief Minister? To think that someone who spouts so much utter kak is responsible for our childrens education is frightening. Go back to the insurance company Rod and give us a break.

  7. You ask what is happening in St Ouens. Something is happening. A contested constable election next time for certain. A row involving the parish paying or not to fund work at Church owned property. There's more. Strange notices about the festival of speed have been posted. Purportedly issued by the Constable of St Marie. They authorise closure of roads in St Ouen. Is an inter-parochial war brewing? See Is Constable acting ultra vires

  8. So did the Chief Minister Ian Gorst at any time get forced out of his home and have to work to support his family as Lincoln had? Did the Chief Minister also fail in business as Lincoln had? Has Ian Gorst campaigned to office as an MP previously and lost? Was Ian Gorst ever bankrupt or had a nervous breakdown as Lincoln did and how many attempts did the Chief Minister try and fail at becoming a member of the States of Jersey Government is their a history of repeated failed attempts on Jersey or otherwise?

Where is Ian Gorsts history of facing adversity and frustration on a scale a la Lincoln, who, faced war and assassination attempts. (someone is having a laugh here. Please please tell me this did not happen in the States Chamber. Where is there, a single parallel between the two men) I mean really how did any member keep a straight face let alone vote in favor after hearing that I am crying with laughter and wiping coffee of my computer.

    1. It was certainly one of those 'am I hearing this right' moments, as was Lewis giving his evidence to the Inquiry.

Really folks, these are our elected representatives. No small wonder this Island is in disarray.

    2. i wonder was this a very convoluted appeal for someone to assassinate Chief Minister Gorst?

No doubt the Police Chief is on the job but he'll have a job nailing this, given parliamentary privilege.

  9. Deputy Rod Bryans may as well have passed an encyclopedia around the members and asked them to pick a page any page and read it out.

    1. I hope Rod Bryans kept that high-viz navy's jacket he used to walk around canvassing at the election.

He is going to need it after he is ousted at the May 2018 election.

I would rather vote for Terry Le Main.

And I would never vote Le Main if you get my drift.

When you hear speeches like this one of Bryans you really wish they had a big red buzzer and an ejector chair like on the Graham Norton chat show.

  10. Having listened to the ramblings of P.B on the definition of what is a 'lie', this man almost put me to sleep with his total BS. Then we have this mega ramble from Bryans, for some years now I have promised myself I will not vote anymore in this Island, but I do, because that is in the hope we as an Island people WILL eventually get people into the States who will truly represent us. One consolation we can all be thankful for is that the wonderful thing called 'time' will eventually see the likes of P.B gone, the tragidy is that there are still so many in this Island that simply 'will not' (or perhaps cannot) accept the fact that we need to change the way this Island is governed. So I will still go and vote and I am thankful that over the many years I have voted I have had the good sense to vote for the right people. Oh one last comment I personally believe that Graham Power was suspended due to one individual (with the help of others) and that person was Mr 737.

  11. Mr 737 was one. Another was definitely The land and property scandal Deputy C Labey exposed.

  12. I am not voting anymore Anonymous 19.13. It is now pointless. The worst stay in there for years though they do nothing for us. The best get shafted and barred. Someone please wake me up when Mr Testicular Fortitude can stand for election again as he should be able. I listen to the likes of Bryans and I am minded of a childhood happily watching Jackanory. This grown up Bryans version just isn't funny. Tragic.

    1. I totally agree with you here, but the reason I do still vote is because I do believe that having a 70% none voting public is exactly what the 'establishment' want, why, because their foot soldiers will always get in and vote. That is why we keep getting the same recycling of old guard, let's face it do you really think that TPTB are interested in us plebs, this is all about keeping power and feathering nests.

  16. PPC came down on the side of the Child Abuse Report lock stock and barrel, thus confirming that Andrew Lewis did indeed lie. The Bailiwick Express article goes deeper and is worth reading. The Question is where does this leave Bailhache, Shenton, Walker and John Boothman all who have come for some strange reason to support Andrew Lewis in the situation he now finds himeself.

The only answer one can get to is that they have not read the detailed easy to read Rico Sorda and VFC detailed factual bloggs which lay and explains the suspension of Graham Power and the power players behind this immense action fronted by Andrew Lewis. Had they, then the four of them would have had great difficulty in supporting Andrew Lewis

    1. Oh no this runs deeper than that as far as these 4 are concerned. I suspect they may all be members of the same lodge, or at least friendly masons, and are really still trying to justify the suspension of Power on IJCI grounds, in order to deflect attention away from, the real shenanigans regarding planning corruption and who knows what else. Actually I think I know who knows what else. Most likely Stuart does as a trusted custodian of leaked information. This is why hes so cautious at the moment and this is why they are still out to get him.

    2. I'm not sure PPC confirmed anything - they merely rubber stamped what the Inquiry said without looking at it in any detail.

  17. This Andrew Lewis stuff is a waste of time going over.
The best they can do is give him a stern telling off - whoopee!
    He is untouchable, period.

  18. SPEECH ON LAUNCH OF INQUIRY REPORT

Readers will be aware of the unsatisfactory nature of the Inquiry website virtually from the word go.

The Inquiry claims it has now handed over the website to the States. In fact the transfer process is still ongoing.

Consistent with its behaviour to date, the Inquiry has bequeathed the States a defective home page where Francis Oldham's speech launching the Inquiry report is divided in two parts, the first part of which is inaccessible, certainly to many if not most of us.

This leaves a serious gap as the speech is a very good introduction to the context of the Inquiry, particularly if one leaves aside for the moment the many qualifications to the status and operation of the Inquiry itself. These qualifications have been intensively ventilated on this site over time.

I was anxious myself to read the full statement and I contacted the States Greffier, as advised on the Inquiry site.

The Greffier and his staff responded to my contact in a very constructive manner and the outcome is that, pending the sorting out of the legacy homepage, they have accepted my suggestion to host the full document on my own website. I was very encouraged by their approach in my dealings with them, and would like to thank them for giving me the opportunity to make the document available to all who want to read it.

The speech can now be accessed, both parts in a single document, at the link below.

  19. Jersey politicians like to quote from United States politicians presumably because they watch Fox News. Perhaps it is the hegemonic dominance of US television that influences their choice of quotable persons. Even Churchill, the great hero of the British Ruling Class in their most difficult hour, is rarely spoken of.

I look forward to the day when they cite instead great European politicians and political thinkers like the Pole Rosa Luxembourg, the Frenchman Jean Jaures or Italian Antonio Gramsci. Somehow I cannot see this happening soon, as these three individuals are part of European Left culture. It is so much easier to pay homage to slave owners and other long dead white men of the political right.
