Jersey By Election 2016 (2) St. Clement Husting.

In part two of our by election series we offer video recordings of the candidates opening speeches (and in one case "closing" speech) at last nights hustings at St. Clement Parish Hall.

In part one of this series we conducted a poll where readers could vote for their preferred candidate. We started the poll before nomination night and before all candidates had declared so not all candidates were included in the poll. We have now started another poll (on the left hand side of the page) with all candidates included so why not give your preferred candidate a vote? Including Kim Jong-Un or none of the above?

The previous poll received in excess of 300 votes, the results of which can be seen below.

Candidates hustings speeches St Clement Parish Hall.

Sarah Ferguson.

Christian May.

Sam Mezec.

Alvin Aaron.

Guy De Faye.

John Young.

Stevie Ocean.

Mary O'Keeffe-Burgher.

Mike Dun.

Hugh Raymond.

Nick Le Cornu.

  1. Thank you for making these available. As my father used to say. The one thing you can say for political hustings is that they certainly show you who not to vote for if nothing else! Only four appear competent. Only three of these would even tempt me to consider a vote due to their evident progressive leanings. One clearly only thought about what he might say ten minutes before he stood up. Another one looks like she may well have less brain cells than the pearls round her neck (and surely she is above the 18/19 year old age bracket she advocates for work?). One looks like a wino. One is surely stonk-bonking mad! Jersey is obviously in safe hands. Not. Come back Trevor. Please.

  2. It probably tells you all you need to know about what is wrong with Jersey when you realise that electing Kim Jung-Un would actually register a move to the political Left from the doctrine of our council of ministers.

  3. Only trouble is not enough people either at hustings or online to see what they are potentially getting!!

  4. The silence when Nick Le Cornu was introduced is almost palpable. Why are you doing it man? I genuinely thought bottom place would be a straight fight between Ocean and De Faye until poor old Nick declared. Some things you just can't fake, Nick. As even all good girlies know.

    1. You obviously didn't listen to the end of his speech. That sounded more like people clapping to me than silence. You also seem to be implying that to be taken seriously, candidates should try to bus in as many of their supporters as possible from around the island in order to create a false impression in the room that they are more popular than their opponents. It is intimidating and obviously favours those candidates like Mezec and May who have the most resources and manpower to call upon. It was obvious from watching just 5 seconds of the first hustings meeting on Monday that at least half the audience were not St Saviour residents but had come from elsewhere to cheer on their own candidates. I saw the same thing 2 years ago at the Ommaroo when non-St Helier residents Murray Norton and Peter Mac were sitting at a table cheering Wickenden like mad during a hustings supposedly for St Helier No. 1 electors. Grouville's Deputy Labey was sat at another table, probably supporting Deputy Judy Martin (or maybe her Jersey namesake Russell?). At another table, known supporters of Deputy Martin who had signed her nomination paper were deliberately talking through all of Gino Risoli's speeches, which is so disrespectful. Anyway, enjoy your anonymity, Mr Anonymous.

    2. If you think Mezec has the most resources when up against Establishment sponsored and wealthy joke candidates like Mrs Beefburger, Tango Man Raymond and Mr Theresa May you are having a laugh. Can quite believe what you say about shite DJs Norton and Maclinton though. And wasn't Wickenden a bad choice? useless and did not even have ten proposers.

That meeting was lousy all round. It just showed how without Deputy Trevor Pitman we had nobody of any ability or balls to represent us in district 1 any more. You are dead right about Murray and Mac. Why were they there but to try and influence voters to support their useless mate? I also recall Richard Rondel being there and him being a district 3 Deputy wondering why he kept turning up at district 1 events. Nice man I acknowledge but another useless politician. The States is full of cronies and cowards.

Those who say they can change things are not being honest because they can't and those who reckon they care about people only care about themselves.

    1. To say that none of the candidates care is obvious nonsense. Individuals in this election such as Mike Dun, Sam Mezec, John Young and even, right-winger as she is, Saeah Ferguson clearly do care. Whether they can do anything much to change things for the better other than just simply try is another question.

    3. No questions have been asked, by the public at the two Hustings so far, and no candidate has mentioned it. "Operation Panama" looks to be a complete shambles of which the SOJP are trying to play down but need taking to task.

Team Voice have a Blog Posting ready to publish on this debacle but out of respect for the family (who we are in contact with) we have decided not to publish until after Adrian's memorial on Friday.

Mike Dun's Brexit campaign is at least timely and relevant to the Island. Brexit will be decided in about 2 years when the senatorial term of office expires.

    3. "... can't make my mind up between Sam Mezec or Mike Dun."

I suspect some people have now made their mind up about Mezec after reading what he said about Mike on Planet Jersey a couple of days ago. Quote as follows:

"As much as I admire a lot of what Mike does, he is not a team player and is not good at running campaigns. So he won't get elected and would make no impact even if he did."

      http://planetjersey.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3916.msg61050;topicseen#msg61050

Some way to show your admiration! The first choice of local union barons also bitched that Mike was not a "serious" candidate.

The electors must take Sam's views quoted above into full consideration and decide if he is fit to merit their vote. Having personally experienced Mike's generosity and unconditional willingness to help anyone who might need it, together with the look of fear and apprehension that comes over the faces of civil servants when he walks through the Department or Tribunal door, there is simply no comparison with the latest career politician Mezec, or with anyone else for that matter.

Mike is way out on his own.

The three that came across as having any depth of the problems, and therefore the possible solutions, faced by real people living on this expensive island plus not afraid or intimidated by Ozouf et al, were Ferguson, Young and Dunn. All of them well researched having good knowledge of the scrutiny and its past work. 3. Ozouf proposed civil partnerships. Mezec (Reform) lost the vote on equal marriage and gave it to Gorst to do. Reform let us lesbians down big time because they were so angry and offensive in the debate. Mezecs proposal was only for civil marriage which was exactly the same as the civil partnership my wife and I already had. I hate Gosrt, but his proposal was for any marriages with willing clergy or what have you, and now we are properly married. Christian May was the main pro advisor to that. He should be singing it from the rooftops but some homophobes are picking on him because he's gay, but he's done loads of stuff for people that arent. Rescuing People's park for eg. Mezec is trying to claim that as a Reform Jersey vicory but that's rubbish. May led it and Jackie Hilton did the states stuff.

    2. I remember reading that Bowron's mob had told Mrs Pitman there apparently wasn't enough evidence to prosecute the driver. To be fair it seems there were only three witnesses who all told the police the geezer hadn't stopped at a red light knocking her down on a pedestrian crossing. "Just an accident" was how I think it was reported on here?

Later on I did here somewhere that when Mrs Pitman tried to pursue it she discovered that the police apparently had not even bothered to take proper statements and the details of one had even been 'mislaid'. That is last I heard. Poor Adrian never had a chance of justice really.

      Delete
    3. No wonder Shona Pitman didn't get justice if the Chief of Police was happy to write unjustified attacks on her husband in the local paper as mentioned at 23.58 on August 19th. Guess we really do need an external review of our police.

  32. These questions have been asked before but are well worth asking again for those new to the voting process.

    1) Why is a pencil used in the voting booths? Surely this would be be very easy to change? Suggestion: Put a little spit on the end of your finger tip and dip the pencil tip into it and then place your X the moisture will make the pencil lead soak into the paper and be almost impossible to erase.

2)If a voter uses a pen or biro would this invalidate the vote?

3)If a voter put a 'tick' instead of a X would this also invalidate the vote?

To the best of my knowledge there are no 'clear' directives to voters on some of the above and it would be good to know what others think, remember it was not so long ago that the JEP during all elections would always indicate a 'ticked' box instead of a X.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I believe that the pencil issue was another of the many concerns once brought up in the States by Trevor Pitman. I'm afraid I can't remember when but I seem to think the Constables were saying this was to be fazed out. As your rightly say there can be no argument for keeping the practice if openness and everything being above board is what are committed to. I also remember being told at a polling station in St Helier once that a tick would be acceptable so long as it was quite clear that the voter had intended to make a mark in that particular box. But this is Jersey as we know. So quite possible that a tick in another parish might not be accepted according to the jurat's whim. Maybe other readers can shed more light on the question?

  35. Why are candidates not talking about real everyday issues which the population of Jersey are having to face; such as the forced removal of copper-line telephone services, and mandatory replacement by "more expensive" Fibre-Optic Technology.

In other words, the population of the island of Jersey are being "used" to fund fibre-optic technology so that the finance industry can have this service at next to no cost to themselves.

In an aggressive systematic marketing campaign by Jersey Telecom islanders are being told that they must have their copper lines removed (which upon refusal are being threatened with disconnection) and replaced by "expensive" fibre-optic cables and consumer powered electronics; this of course is to provide a large customer base to financially support and subsidise fibre-optic technology for the finance industry.

Just another expensive burden forced upon the population of Jersey to yet again subsidise an industry which has captured its government and changed a democracy into a dictatorship.

    Come on candidates, wake up!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Do the prospective candidates have any comments regarding how the population of jersey are being forced to fund fibre-optic technology, so the finance industry can have this technology on the cheap?

A look at the States of Jersey commissioned publication, the "Jersey Innovation Review" (September 2015) may illuminate readers to this fact:

However, the cost of off-island telecommunications connectivity was suggested as a barrier to innovation for firms requiring high-volume secure data connections. Given the likely sectors in which an island like Jersey could develop deeply competitive niche clusters – such as financial technology back office functions – ensuring low-cost connectivity is critical. This is something which was considered by the Jersey Competition and Regulatory Authority (JCRA) in their 2014 consultation on business connectivity. The report states:

“the JCRA expressed concern over the pricing of off-island connectivity, particularly of the higher capacity leased lines, and noted that this issue has been raised repeatedly by businesses in Jersey in the context of the retail market.”

However, the JCRA concluded that “no operator is dominant in the provision of wholesale off-island leased lines in Jersey” and there is no issue of capacity being constrained. If neither competition nor capacity is an issue, this suggests that the underlying structural position of the Island is inherently higher-cost and that the issue would need to be mitigated in other ways. In practice, this might require direct support to businesses dependent on high-volume connections in order to make their business model competitive on-island.

  37. Some posters have had a go at Police Chief Bowron because he had a go at Trevor Pitman in the JEP when in fact Higgins had said the things which he was attacking Trevor for saying. And he (Bowron) "should have known".

How can he possibly have known? Why should he, and by extension, why should all of us, have to go fact checking everything we read in the JEP?

Yes mistakes get made, we are all human, but the correction of mistakes, and the apologies where appropriate, have to be honest, and be given proper space, and be easy to find.

I remembered having taken this up with editor Chris Bright at the time. I got zero satisfaction. The exchange sheds plenty of light on the JEP's standards. Here is my email:

    Dear Chris,

In a recent edition of the JEP I noticed a series of three small items, at the foot of the page, all of which were in fact corrections.

But they were not listed as such. (Thursday 18th April, page 6, "IN BRIEF")

In recent days you wrongly attributed a line of questioning in the States to one States member (T. Pitman) when the questioning was in fact by another member (Higgins). The police chief read the report and wrote a letter to the paper questioning what the member (who had not asked the question) had "done".

You can see how damaging this all is - can you? The States member stands wrongly accused by the Police Chief, with all that that may imply - having to set the matter straight, (if the JEP does not) etc. The Police Chief has been made to look stupid by your mis-reporting of the question. Again he has to set the matter straight also, he even has to apologise and re-cast the letter, time taken away from more important matters.

So, my questions to you are:

1 will you publish a correction and apology in this matter?
2 will the correction and apology be of similar size and prominence with the original piece? (It certainly should be given that you have messed up two people.)
3 will you initiate a set place in the paper, a spot easy to locate, for corrections, and headed as such?

Mistakes do happen: what is important, especially in your unique position of influence in Jersey, is to set them right.

And 4 Do you agree with that statement? And post-Leveson will you take action about it?

    Dear Daniel,

As you may have seen, a correction and apology was published some days ago.

    Regards,

    Chris.

Sounds OK but it absolutely wasn't: here is my reply:

    Dear Chris,

    Thank you for this reply.

The "correction and apology" which you printed displayed all the faults which I was asking you to fix!

It was tiny in relation to the original story and the letter which our Chief of Police penned in his self-defence AND if that was an apology then I am a Dutchman! It was the bog-standard, "the error is regretted."

The whole point is that the press has enormous power and with that goes responsibility. In this case the responsibility was to put the story right - for the sake of your readers, who you have misinformed and in whose mind that misinfiormation (sic) now masquerades as the truth. Do you not think that is important?

And then also for the sake of the two people involved one of whom was moved to attack the other in terms which were defamatory. Again, will you apologise to the two people involved in a way which sounds like a true apology? Again do you realise the importance of whta (sic) you have done?

    Best wishes

    Daniel Wimberley

I have checked to the end of June - there was no reply from the JEP.

  38. Sorry Daniel,

Means nothing to many people who now get their more reliable information and debate from the internet and no longer feel the need to put up with the JEP's poor, inaccurate, arrogant biased ( take your pick ) reporting.

Therefore join the thinking people who no longer bother to purchase the JEP. As a person interested in Jersey and its politics, it was strongly suggested that I purchase the online offering. I would rather give the money to charity. You are correct in that the JEP still carries influence, but I suggest this is declining with the rise of the internet.

For the immediate future the JEP will probably fill with adverts from states departments, and subsidiaries like ports of Jersey or Jersey, Jersey Finance Digital Jersey all telling us how excellent and of benefit to the island they are ? All paid for indirectly by islanders and sactioned by Ministers who like to tax and spend.

    Boatyboy.
