Jersey by-election September 2016.

As most islanders will be aware there is a Senatorial (Island-Wide) by-election underway and a number of people have declared their candidacy already.

VFC has added a poll on the left-hand-side of the main page of this Blog in order to gauge readers views, or a kind of straw-poll if you like.

There are also a couple of rumoured candidates who we have added to the poll and will add further names as candidates declare.

If your favoured candidate is on the poll then give them a vote.

Nomination night is at the St Helier Town Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 9 August 2016. The election, and votes will be counted on, Wednesday 7 September 2016.

  1. None of the above (so far). Show me a decent green/eco candidate, please. Someone! You know like Stuart Syvret or Gary Matthews or even Daniel Wimberley.

    2. The below is from Dr. Mark Forskitt who is experiencing difficulties leaving comments. He makes some very valid points.

"Kind of you to say so VFC. But what, I ask, would be the point of standing
in the by election? I would be happy to be a standard bearer for an
organised group with a thought out liberal and strongly environmental
manifesto/programme of government. I wouldnt mind being a lone voice if
elected especially when I see no real debate on things like the
authoritarian digital policy being now proposed, and hugely undervalued
ecology of the island and it impacts on life quality. Ive been in that
position plenty of times in my life. But standing as an individual with so
large an array of policy areas and projects to tackle it would be like
trying to bash your brains out with a blancmange - ineffective, tasteless
and ultimately futile. I'm not that stupid!"

  2. Hi. I've voted for Mike Dunn. The reason being that of those standing, only Mike and Sam Mezec would get my vote and seeing that Sam already has a seat, my vote is a tactical one. Mike is a hard working man who, like Sam, will work hard for the oppressed population. I'm glad Mike has decided to put himself forward.

    1. Agree 100% Anonymous. I also have voted for Mike Dunn, but my alternative would be Sam. I feel that,(and not from my perspective) that he will get the usual 'he is to young, has long hair, plays and instrument'! type reaction from the voting public. Wrong, but that is the mindset of a lot of people. You are valuable on the back benches Sam, and people are slowly coming round to your politics. In the interim Mike Dunn certainly knows his stuff and is nobody's fool.

I agree as wel VFC that Mark Forskitt would also be a very credible candidate.

  4. I'm intrigued the most by Mike Dun and have voted for him because I would love to hear what he has to say about how Brexit is going to effect Jersey. I haven't made up my mind if I will vote for Mike Dun or Sam Mezec yet in the election but I am leaning on the Mike Dun side because his tag line represents real political debate. I'm sure Sam will be raising some great political ideas and discussion also so I am looking forward to the hustings and manifestos.

  12. Well let's be honest none of them is Trevor Pitman and that is who we really need. But in the much missed Mr TF's enforced absence I too will go for Mike Dun. Like TP an honest man committed to the ordinary folk of this island. Unfortunately I do have to say that at present I can only see Sarah Ferguson winning this at a canter. Or possibly a hobble? I saw her the other day and she seemed to be relying heavily on a walking cane. Will her health stand up?

People can vote the same person every time they return and it counts it.

  15. You need to scrap your poll because its being abused.

On a serious note I suggest either scraping the poll or modifying it if that is possible to allow one vote per appliance. 18. What I hate hearing most is candidates standing because they want to change things because they don't like what they see happening in the states.

Why would anybody want to join something that simply doesn't work, useless and is bonkers?

What that tells me is that the candidate is lying, nieve or doesn't understand what they want to join. You can only help change something if you join the executive. Check how many propositions are won by backbench politicians compared to the executive. Next to zero. It has nothing to do with the myth of forming consensus in the states. They only let through what they want let through. The floor of the legislature, through block voting and the majority of constables allow this. Don't take my word for this-go to hansard and check for yourself.

The system doesn't work for the people. Stealth tax after stealth on the way. Will all sail through.

Until we can remove a government we are getting robbed blindly.

  23. Mike Dun is a great blogger who does Jersey politics a service with all the work he does, but he's not cut out for being a politician.

If more anti-Establishment candidates come out, it will just split the vote making it an easy ride in for the Establishment candidate (Christian May).

Tactical voting is a must and it's clear that only Mezec could stand a chance of winning. Time to rally behind him and not bother with candidates who aren't serious.

    ReplyDelete
  24. But wouldn't that cause another election for town deputy. May could take that seat?

    1. In St Helier No. 2? No way. Whoever Reform put up to replace Mezec would walk it.

    2. This is where the candidates should be working together. Dun and Mezec should strike a deal where if one backs out of this election the other will support him in the Deputy election. They are the only two candidates on the current list who are a credible opposition to the current COM and I agree people should get behind one of them because with a split vote the establishment candidate(Christian May) will get in and be an assistant minister the day after he is elected.

      Delete
    3. Agree that May would have no chance in St Helier No 2. Loads of people still highly pi**ed off that Shona Pitman who did so much for people there had her seat nicked by the Bailiff's bent court. Don't think May has a hope in hell in the by-election either. Just using it to raise his profile. Be great if Mike Dun pulls off the shock of the decade.

    1. Yes absolutely spot on. The great threat is that the TOTAL vote will be diluted because of all the names being thrown into the hat and sad to say many Jersey voters seem to think that because someone said "hello" and shook their hand that must mean they are simply 'so nice'. If Stuart Syvret had become this Islands first Chief Minister, as the vote clearly showed, we most certainly would not have had to have the CoI because he would have well and truly cleaned up the mess. What we got was a cooked up stale meal of someone who just scrapped in on their a....e, why? because he had the numbers. CONSTABLES OUT.

  36. What is the logic of Sam Mezec, a sitting Deputy, opposing Mike Dun for a Senatorial seat?

Is it just Sam wanting to have an extra Reform seat in the States? Surely it is splitting the "opposition" and with no guarantee of Sam's replacement with a Reform Deputy, if he is elected Senator?

The question is asked in all honesty. I am not up to fully assessing the implications, being off island.

    1. Polo,
      Speaking from the Achill outpost but normally on island I would put a VERY personal interpretation as this;

There are two obvious ' not gainfully employed ' candidates , one blotted his political copybook to such an extent that his votes are unlikely to be in four figures, the other is a globe short of a significant body of water.
We then have a contrarian ex politician who has held the government to account in the past but also followed some 'barking' routes as well supporting the unsupportable . She will get some votes but is not an 'establishment ' candidate.
Mike Dun , bless him, a stalwart, principled campaigner putting his head above , to get his message over . The reality as I am certain he knows is that he will be an also ran.Unlike the first two it will be for good reasons and with dignity.

Christian May is playing a different game and I have a very strong but unconfirmable view that he is closet. As in closet establishment ! The proof of this may well come later when his man of the people approach 'forces the CoM to listen ' with regard to something like the Hospital Tax. This will make him look good and the CoM as reactive. If elected he will be rapidly elevated to a cosy silence.
That leaves Sam Mezec , simply at this juncture and in this context he has a real chance. The disaffection with the CoM is palpable on the streets , some who didn't vote last time because of a lack of possible effect , might be spurred into a single fingered salute. Then he has his own support and a general acceptance that he has a real presence politically unlike the flock of sheep people voted for in the past.

If he fails it will be well, and with good exposure, if he wins then it will create a space in a constituency that will be receptive to the Reform approach.

    2. Mike doesn't stand the faintest chance of winning.

Great guy, don't get me wrong, but his "Vote No" campaign in 2014 was appalling, he isn't a good public speaker and he won't connect with ordinary voters well.

I hope he continues to blog for many years to come but it's a mistake for him to stand and achieve little apart from taking votes away from a progressive candidate who actually stands a chance of winning.

Sam, on the other hand, has a real opportunity to start an earthquake in Jersey politics.

He will run rings around the establishment candidate at the hustings, he performs exceptionally well on the radio, he already has a reputation amongst the disaffected as their "champion" and his social media presence is huge.

How anyone can think Mike is a viable alternative to Sam is just barking. It doesn't reflect the reality of how elections work.

Yes, Sam may already be in the States, but it is as a deputy where the Council of Ministers and their right wing supporters who write to the JEP can dismiss him as just speaking for poor people in St Helier who they think are stupid and know nothing. As a Senator he will speak for the whole Island and be able with authority to say he has a mandate from everyone to stand against the Council of Ministers.

He is our best shot and these questions about division should be put to Mike, not him.

Also worth noting that Sam declared as a candidate before Mike did, and that was with him having to get party approval first.

    3. Also, on Christian May and whether he is part of the establishment, on Channel TV's election night coverage in 2014, you could clearly see Christian May in the background at Philip Ozouf's house.

All three have attempted to flag up known abuse where attempts had earlier been made to cover it up.

It is the CoI (supposedly) charged with finding the truth and bestowed with massive funding and the legal statutory powers.

Mr. Syvret is now an already much abused private individual (NB imprisonment, death threats, media attacks and lies......)

He is indeed an Ex-politician, Ex-Health Minister, Ex-Father of the House and persistent child protection campaigner

The refusal to provide Syvret (or any other witness) with legal advice prior to signing the bizarre "protocols" is just another abuse of this whistleblower and renders the CoI VOID in most legal and meaningful senses.

      - Yes for lifting the lid on Jerseys decades of actively concealed child abuse and for publishing the leaked Police report on the suspected killer nurse (and holder of illegal weapons and lethal drugs stolen from the hospital)

"1[b].......you make it sound like he was put away without a trial.

Itis not just Ex-Health Minister Syvret who has been subjected to 'Jersey Justice'

A real trial would have allowed the defence of public interest.

Would you like to talk about the SECRET TRIAL ?

"2) If Mr Syvret is having his life threatened then he must report this to the Police."

Wishing him to be able to 'move on' from this chapter has nothing to do with supporting the 'Jersey Way'. Hopefully if he wants to one day he may even stand again. I would welcome it.

Well we all know what a shyster Mick Gradwell showed himself to be when he would not answer for his despicable actions to the Scrutiny panel who exposed hi behaviour in leaking information during a live abuse investigation. "80.This is an inquiry: no individual or institution is on trial. This does not mean that the Inquiry will avoid making criticisms, but it does mean that there are no parties and no sides; no scoring of points. Every witness will have a valuable perspective. There will be no cross-examination of witnesses." From HERE.

That said, reportedly, the only witness to have been officially cross-examined was the former Senior Investigating Officer (Operation Rectangle) and Deputy Chief Officer Lenny Harper. From HERE.

She is a serious contender, in 2011 in St.Helier she polled twice as. Many votes as the person below her.
Unfortunately that was Ginormous Risioli and the ten people ahead ( that was spell checked sorry Gino) had lots and lots more votes with successful politician James Baker topping the poll.

    2. I remember Baker's "personal letter" mail deliveries. Brought around to our doors (I live near Marett Court) by Grafters. Really personal they were. If you think having a sticky label on the envelope with your name put there by someone on a zero hours contract is personal? Odd thing was I never saw the candidate throughout the election and neither did anyone I know in the area. Don't know if it was the same story everywhere in the district but there you are. Be very careful who you vote for and why. People can say a lot but once they are elected it is all too often a very different story. Baker was a classic example. I will vote for Dun or Mezec. If Tadier had stood for Reform I would have voted for him for sure.

      CHILD ABUSE IN JERSEY: #2

      And Why it Persists.

      Mike Pollard: a Case Study.

      Part 2.

So – what did readers make of Mike Pollard’s letter to all Jersey Health & Social Services Staff – as reproduced in the first of these two posts?

      Tears?

      Of laughter? Of anger?

It wouldn’t be quite so bad if it merely displayed gross incompetence.

Instead it displays incompetence – and straight-forward lies.

Utter fictions and assertions wholly incompatible with the truth.

Below this post, I re-produce the e-mail I drafted last year to all H & SS staff.

I was never able to deliver it because the States of Jersey e-mail system was rigged against me.

Read my suppressed response of September last year – and then gauge for yourselves which communication is honest: his – or mine.

Evidence such as the Pollard letter serves to demonstrate so well the implacable decadence of public administration in Jersey and the total failure of accountability.

  61. I know one shouldn't but please check out Mary O'Keefe Burhgers election website, www.mary.je. It is the best thing since Guernsey Futu and Proud Jerseyman.I have found this jewel but there are many more.

    On immigration;
'People need to look at the demographics. The current working population is increasingly ageing. Our median age of our working population is 41.6, this is too high. We should be at about 18-19. Our median aged working population will be retiring and Jersey is facing a huge crisis in less than 20 years. Our Millenials need action now not later or we will have mass de-population.Our economy will be devastated. We don’t want Jersey turning into an Isle of White with an aged population and insufficient revenue to support a diverse economy. We need to address this NOW not later on.'

Apart from the meaningless verbiage and Isle of White, she is seriously suggesting that the median age of the working population should be 18-19 years old. Now Mary the 'median ' means the turning point of a frequency field , so as many would need to be below the figure of 18-19 as above. Given a working population of 40,000 that would mean 20,000 from 0-19 years old working .Is she seriously suggesting we import child labour to fill the financial black hole ?
    The public should be told!

  68. A reader at 09:14 above says;

'No he is not excluded. That requires a longer sentence put without the alternative of a fine. Come on, Stuart, worth one more shot.'

That is not correct. And that it should require a detailed explanation of how & why I AM excluded - after everything we've endured - sadly re-enforces the fact we have the government we deserve - and that I wasted my life on politics.

The methods by which the Jersey mafia have constructively barred me from candidacy are many and varied; here are just a few of the more obvious ones:

When elected - and trying to pursue both the requirements of the law (e.g. Children (Jersey) Law 2002) - and my political policies - such as trying to protect children, seeking to shield my constituents from being murdered in their beds, and attempting to see that violent rapists who have attacked my constituents are brought to justice - I get subjected to illegal dawn police-raids by squads of ten officers - who turn the home over from top to bottom - without a search-warrant - who then steel the private data of 1000's of my constituents - whilst I'm locked in windowless police cells for seven and half hours.

When I try to pursue my policies - I get prosecuted - by directly - conflicted - bent, corrupt prosecutors - who are trying to cover-up all those crimes - and I get jailed for months and months on end by the bent masonic gangsters that masquerade as a "judiciary" in Jersey - who do things like shield the corrupt authorities by barring my entire defence case when they can't answer it - and corrupt prosecuting lawyers repeatedly state demonstrable utter lies in court - and overt despicable crooks are enabled to commit perjury against me with utter impunity.

We have nothing remotely resembling a lawful policing, prosecution or judicial system in Jersey. That which we do have - just recently - engaged in the wholly extraordinary spectacle of mounting direct, biased, personalized - politicised - false - attacks against me as a named, powerless private citizen - in statements to the CoI. If I ran for election again these people and the authorities they've captured - which have just put on the public record their direct, rabid, burning, biased - Political - hostility to me - would haul me off and imprison me again.

The mere existence of the offices of Bailiff, Deputy Bailiff, Solicitor General, Attorney Gneral, the law officers department and the Lieutenant Governor - essentially an unaccountable - out-of-control - wholly corrupted - mafia-apparatus empowered by the monarch's personal Letters Patent is - in-and-of-itself - an actual bar to democracy - an active exclusion of real opposition politicians like me - from the Potemkin Village process which masquerades as "elections" in Jersey.

The last time I engaged in discussions about standing for election (the two vacant Deputy seats caused by the unlawful, non-human-rights compliant - judicially corrupt -exclusion of the Pitmans from the States) the very day after the gangster-apparatus which masquerades as a "court" in Jersey declared the seats vacant - I was woken first thing in the morning by two of its gorillas - hammering on my door - suddenly demanding that I turn up in court to pay £250,000s of supposed "debt" - the "debt" allegedly accrued by the various parts of the gangster apparatus - in preventing me from properly and democratically representing my constituents.

The same thing would happen now.

I long ago stopped keeping a count on the "bill" I supposedly owe Her Majesty's Privateers for the "inconvenience" of them having to repeatedly jail me so as to stop me from carrying out my democratic duty to my constituents, but the total must be well in excess of half-a-million now.

    "Barred" from standing for election?

    Of course I'm fucking barred.

Jesus - stop being complete bloody fools, eh?

    Stuart
