Public Meeting Against the Cuts.

Reform Jersey Chairman Deputy Sam Mezec.

After the publication of the Council Of Minister's latest draft of its MEDIUM TERM FINANCIAL PLAN (MTFP) which has its very own WEBSITE. Jersey's only political party REFORM JERSEY issued a Press Release (below) calling on Islanders to attend a public meeting in order to voice their concerns against the government cuts.

Reform Jersey calls on public to attend meeting to voice concerns on government cuts

Date:- Wednesday 06/07/16
Time:- 7.30pm
Location:- Town Hall

Following the publication of the Council of Minister’s Medium Term Financial Plan Addition, Reform Jersey has called a public meeting for Islanders to share their concerns at government cutbacks and stealth taxes.

“The government has announced its intention to continue on with austerity policies, including breaking their election promises to keep taxes low. To add insult to injury, after cutting support for pensioners and disabled people by £10m last year, they are now introducing a new Health Tax which they are exempting high earners from the full effects of” – Party chairman Deputy Sam Mézec.

“Concerns are also being raised to us by people who work in education and healthcare who are not convinced that the government is providing the real investment into these departments that they claim they are doing.”

“We want to hear from Islanders who are worried about the prospect of cuts to public services, cuts to their jobs and rising tax bills at a time where many people are already struggling. We should be aiming to replicate the successful Save People’s Park campaign to force government ministers to think again.”

The meeting will begin at the Town Hall at 7:30pm on Wednesday 6th July. Representatives from education and healthcare workers will be on the platform. (END)

VFC interviewed party Chairman DEPUTY SAM MEZEC (below) in order to try and make a little sense out of the governments austerity measures, or the MTFP, and what it would mean to ordinary islanders. What it does look to mean, in certain areas, is that the government now appears to be targeting Middle Jersey with the poorest, and richest, in society being protected.

We hope the short interview below will be informative to readers and with the MTFP document being 200 pages in length obviously we could not discuss its entirety.

It will be discussed in greater detail at the up-coming Public Meeting on Wednesday 6 July 7:30pm St. Helier Town Hall.

Reform Jersey plan to submit a number of amendments to the MTFP and want to hear from islanders who would like to contribute to those amendments.

If you want your voice heard, and for "people power" to make a difference in shaping the future direction of this government, and Island, then be at the Public Meeting this Wednesday.

I will definitely be there. Can't afford to go out much in Jersey these days thanks to this useless posse of Ministers so I'll make a night of it with a few beers and a kebab. Well done Deputy Mezec.

  3. Well said Sam, and good on Reform Jersey for organising this meeting. There is such a lot of unrest in this Island at the moment the like of which I have never experienced before. I can't be at the meeting, but support you 100% and anything that I can do to help or spread the word I am willing to do.

  4. What unrest in the Island?
Employment is way up, tax take is sky high, tourism is booming, finance is booming, housing market is active and agriculture is also on the up.

    2. Really?
I looked a moment ago and there are 3,570 jobs available on the JEP website.
We have already been told that tax take is up.
We have already been told that Tourism is up and we know the housing market from Royal court transactions is certainly up.
The Island is doing well and even more money is coming in since Brexit.

Mainly zero contract and minimum wage jobs few can afford let alone would want. As for tax take being up you must be having a laugh in real terms. New stealth taxes on the way - all because the Council of Incompetent neo-liberals continue to let millions slip away to their friends because they can't be arsed to do anything about the massive leakage caused by zero/ten. How many years has this farce gone on now Mr Seldom Seen Ozouf?

    4. Look I work in the Finance Industry and business is coming out of our ears right now and to be honest, if it were not for Senator Ozouf's hard work and dedication we wouldn't be doing as well.
Lets let the voters decide in 2018.

    5. Business is coming out of our ears, is it? Perhaps the organisation Jersey Finance can stand on its own two feet then, and not survive on grants from the taxpayer? According to you, we've never had it so good!

    7. You are referring to 2015 not 2016.
This year has taken off like a rocket.

    8. Like I said, I work in the industry and you only have to look at the desperate need for staff at this moment to see the minor drop in 2015 is well behind us. It would make a change if people would say 'great to hear it' instead of wishing the economy down all the time.
      Why are people so gloomy?

    10. No matter what I say I get the impression that Deputy Mezec hopes the finance industry is not doing okay.
But the Finance Center will eventually prove him wrong.

    11. You have the wrong impression. Deputy Mezec is on record supporting an ethical Finance Industry. Will you be going to the meeting on Wednesday evening to publicly voice your opinion?

    12. I work in finance. Trust actually. Contrary to the lie spun above this year hasn't 'taken off like a rocket'. Most clients/investors are very unsure of what is going on. Put bluntly many others are really crapping themselves. The future of our industry is currently very Shakin' Stevens.

  5. Thank you Deputy Mezec and Reform Jersey for supporting middle Jersey because we will soon be a thing of the past as the Government continue to squeeze us while protecting the rich and poor. I was previously of the belief that Reform Jersey only speak for the poorest in our society attack the rich and ignore us middle Jersey.

I'll come to your meeting on Wednesday and if you are serious about representing the middle Jersey I will make myself known to you and consider voting for a Reform Jersey candidate at the next election if you field one in my district (St. Clement) I'll stop short of joining the party until we have spoken and you have convinced me you are supporting those of us who are being squeezed the most by this Government.

  6. The £145 Million deficit (which will be lower anyway) is there because the States are investing money in Health, Education and Home Affairs.
I believe most voters already understand and have accepted this.

All you can do is lobby as many States Members as possible to try and get a majority to vote against these proposals.

They may be forgetting that a lot of voters want the States to stop wasting money.

  10. Thanks for this fantastic video VFC, yet again Mezec goes completely hat-stand whilst supporting everything that I have been saying for years. Mezec still ponders why government are constantly attacking the poor, and now the middle classes, I explained this 3 or 4 years ago. I stated that "THEY" (government) had finished their number on the poor and would soon be attacking the middle classes, the middle class can also be turned into slaves, and will be. It's called "The New World Order" Mezec, or are you still in denial....I so hope you post this comment VFC as the best answer to government tyranny is Max Igan and associates. Wake the hell up sheep!!!

But joking aside, open your 50 grand a year 'rose tinted' eyes mezec. The most prestigious medical journal on the planet (The Lancet) tells a man of your calibre that government is poisoning you, and you mock me for stating the bleeding obvious whilst trying to save idiots like yourself from being poisoned by the very government that you defend with your life?

    6. I can confirm the Big Ian stories. I had a drink (quite a few actually!)in a bar in Playa de la Americas. He was in good form and still doing his excellent blog once he had finished with the jet-ski punters for the day. Top geezer badly missed in Jersey. But who would swap the rain and trolls here for endless sunshine, warm sea and cheaper booze? Good luck to him.

  12. Jersey turned out over two thousand people for the circle of the SoJDC hated messing about in office building - site protest. Jersey turned out for the gay equality march, Jersey turned out for the save the peoples park and Jersey united will say one day enough is enough and their will be social unrest and uprising.

The question is when. Will it be when your savings have all gone in taxes ? will it be when another ( blog instigated whistle blower ) story shows more pig in the trough spending of tax payers money on a golf trip in some far flung corner of the world ?

It could be that as the writing is clearly on the wall, with little doubt this Government has lost the support of the majority of the working and pensioned population, that action is now due and it is time to get out of the armchair and make a stand.
Imagine for a start as a States member getting hundreds of emails of discontent each and every week or being heckled in the street or asked questions in the restaurant. This should become the norm for " many " politicians that nn longer listen, and need reminding who and what they are.

The people have the power, they just don't know or believe it.

    Boatyboy.

  13. Agree 100% BB. I have never experienced so much unrest and concern amongst the people I speak with about this Government and its policies and spending, it's lack of any concern or regard towards the poorer or more vulnerable in our society. It appears they are totally out of control and should be reined in sooner rather than later.

Why should people be afraid of questioning any politician anywhere on any subject of concern whenever or where-ever. The electorate appointed them, we pay their over inflated salaries. We should therefore have the power to dispose of them, and I personally think the time could be looming.

    1. Jersey politicians' salaries aren't inflated in themselves. The problem is that the vast majority of the sheeple aren't brave or aware enough to challenge the 90+% who don't care about earning the money once elected. We need a recall mechanism like Deputy Pitman was advocating before he was stolen from us. With that in place we could hold the skivers and noddy dogs to account. Without party politics it's the only thing that will. Unless you are all up for storming the Reichstag with me by any chance?

  14. Slightly off topic but I hope the CoI are watching the latest developments at Jersey Health were a Doctor had his complaint about a job offer being withdrawn upheld by the complaints board, but Green said he would ignore it as his staff have had their integrity and their honesty called into question and they couldn't possibly have done anything wrong.

    1. Indeed, "The Jersey Way" at its finest. Deputy Green will know what happened to the last Health Minister (former Senator Stuart Syvret) who tried holding Civil Servants in the Health Department to account. Deputy Green won't want that happening to him so The Jersey Way prevails.

“Will the Minister undertake to establish why the summary forensic report for the Operation Rectangle investigation was removed from the States of Jersey Police website, inform members of the reasons, and ensure that it is reinstated and if not, why not?”

    1. Yes there is still a reluctance from the Establishment to have all evidence revealed for the public to be able to make an informed opinion. There are paedophiles, those who wish to protect paedophiles, and others who don't want Graham Power's side of events published.

The Establishment, paedophiles, paedophile protecters, and others want to portray the disgraced Wilts Report as some kind of definitive smoking gun. When the truth is that it is "the prosecution case" against the former (possibly illegally suspended) Police Chief. He has written a 62,000 word, 94 page, defence case but those mentioned above don't want it to see the light of day. Natural justice tells us that both sides of a story need to be heard but of course we deal with "Jersey Justice" over here which bears little, or no, resemblance to "Natural Justice."

The Operation Rectangle Report that was taken off the States of Jersey Police's website details among much more, the search criteria for Haut de la Garenne and the numerous juvenile remains unearthed there. It can be viewed exclusively HERE.

  17. Good to see Big Ian appearing on here and people saying how well he is doing. Loved his blog even if he did need a swear box.

Someone else above mentioned that other Big dude, Big Trev as often seems to happen on here. Reading the JEP, not bought by me I hasten to add, I saw another reminder of just how good Big Trev was.

Story on there being around 1400 suspensions from schools in Jersey in the last four years. 1400! Disgraceful. Most of these kids just have problems and aren't bad.

People often mention the Scrutiny review Trevor led about Operation Rectangle and rightly so. But this story reminded me of another Scrutiny report he chaired that also upset people. This was all about schools suspensions.

I tell you when you go back and look at it these new figures show absolutely nothing has been learned about helping vulnerable kids here. Anyone interested should check it out on line.

  18. Just been catching up with the Rico Sorda blog. Shocking that the Jersey Evening Post would not publish Advocate Sinel's letter about all of the children's remains found at Haut de la Garenne. This can only be collusion with the LOD to help paint the false picture for the public about Lenny Harper being wrong to tell the world the truth. The Jersey Way writ large yet again.
