Adrian Lynch. Team Voice Questions to Superintendent Stewart Gull. (Part 1)

Adrian Lynch.

Following the tragic discovery of Adrian Lynch's body Thursday 4th August in the Handois reservoir, Adrian's family, and the public, will consider Adrian being found and returned to his family as a blessing that many thought would never happen.

Adrian went missing on the 4/5th December 2015 after attending a work's party at the Merton Hotel. He remained missing for eight months until the discovery of his body on the 4th August 2016.

Adrian's funeral took place on Friday 19 August 2016 and a subsequent public memorial was held, on the same day, where, it is reported, more than three hundred islanders, family and friends, attended to pay their respects to Adrian. He is/was a very popular young man who clearly made a positive impact on many people's lives and will be sadly missed.

We, at Team Voice, and members of the public, are left with many un-answered questions and confusion. We are prepared to, and have, asked the questions (e-mail below) of the States of Jersey Police about the search and non discovery (for eight months) of Adrian in Handois Reservoir.

As is so often the case in Jersey, the official version of events don't appear to stack up under scrutiny, are contradictory, and, in places misleading.

Below is an e-mail sent from Team Voice to Superintendent Stewart Gull who appears to be "the face" of Operation Panama. It is unclear as to what has happened to the Senior Investigating Officer Lee Turner.

Detective Superintendent
Stewart Gull.

E-mail to Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull.

"Dear Detective Superintendent.

Following the tragic discovery of the body of Adrian Lynch at the Handois Reservoir on Thursday August 4th 2016 we (Team Voice and Blog Readers) have a number of questions that would/could hopefully clear up a lot of confusion surrounding statements made by you in the local media, and possibly statements made by the local media themselves.

For ease of reference we will number our questions in the hope you will answer them by their numerical order to avoid any more confusion?

1). You have, on a number of occasions in the local media, stated that Handois Reservoir is “incredibly deep.” Our research tells us that, at its deepest, it is 4 metres. Could you confirm our research is correct, and further, that you consider 4 metres of water to be “incredibly deep” in the context of a reservoir being searched with specialist sonar equipment and divers?

2). Experts from Humberside South Yorkshire Search and Rescue came to the Island to assist in the search of Adrian Lynch. They came with a very high tech sonar (Hammerhead Seaking) which they deployed in Handois Reservoir?

(i) What was the maximum depth of the reservoir when they searched Handois?

(ii) How long did they spend searching Handois reservoir in total?

(iii) Did they record their Sonar Sweeps for future reference?

(iv) Did they leave Handois reservoir categorically stating that it was clear? We ask this as Handois is a very small volume of water in which to search.

(v) Did Humberside inform you that Handois was NOT extensively searched?

(vi) Did Humberside police write a report on its search of Handois Reservoir?

(vii) If so, will it be published? If not why not?

(viii) If Humberside DIDN'T write a report, why not?

3). Due to the level of searching Handois reservoir was subjected to is it not reasonable to state that the evidence points to a high possibility that Mr Lynch might not have been in Handois Reservoir at the time of searching? This is also backed up by the pathologist report that appears on the States of Jersey Police Force.

4). If you are claiming that Mr Lynch WAS in Handois Reservoir from the night he went missing would you not agree that this is a gross failure of all agencies involved in searching this small area?

(i) By not discovering Mr Lynch in such a small body of water a week after he went missing could/would have caused undue distress and suffering for the Lynch family?

(ii) If Mr Lynch had been found back in December 2015 a more extensive post mortem could have been carried out and the cause of death ascertained?

(iii). Handois Reservoir was apparently a high priority search area?

(iv). Why wasn't Handois re-searched, when further searches of priority areas were carried out in July of this year?

(v) You have (on local "accredited" media) said Handois Reservoir had areas of "hostile terrain." Could you describe what you mean by "hostile terrain?"

5). Have you or will you offer an unreserved apology to the Lynch family?

(i) If not, why not?

6). You said on BBC Radio Jersey that Operation Panama had no budget. Is it usual police practice for such a large-scale investigation not to have an allocated budget?

On Friday 5th August 2016, an article written by Jack Maguire was published in the Jersey Evening Post. The article stated;

"Handois Reservoir, which acts as a major water treatment works for the Island, is up to 30 metres deep (emphasis added) in places."

Jack Maguire has told Team Voice that he was quoting you when he wrote Handois was "30 metres deep in places." Interestingly he did NOT use quotation marks when allegedly quoting you on this sentence but did on other alleged quotes from you in his article.

7). Did you tell Jack Maguire that Handois Reservoir is "30 metres deep in places?"

(i) If so, why did you tell him that? As we know, at its deepest, Handois is only 4 metres deep.

When challenged by Team Voice regarding your alleged quote (30 metres deep) and the actual depth (4 metres) Mr. Maguire told us it must have been "a slip of the tongue" on your behalf and that you must have meant "30 feet."

(ii) Did you have a "slip of the tongue" and mean to say; "30 feet?"

(iii) If so, would you agree that 30 feet is more than twice the depth of Handois at its deepest and is misleading to the public?

Mr. Maguire has refused to correct this misleading information in his published JEP article telling Team Voice; "it will just confuse matters."

(iv) Did you read the article, and if so, have you asked Mr. Maguire to correct the misleading information? If not why not?

(v) Now that you are aware of the misleading article, will you be asking him to publish a correction, if not why not?

8). You have consistently repeated that the search for Adrian was "thorough and extensive." With hindsight do you believe Handois should have been drained and that; "thorough and extensive" could be perceived as misleading considering it wasn't drained?

(i) Why wasn't it drained?

(ii) How much would it have cost to drain the reservoir in comparison with the £14,000 paid to Humberside Police?

9). The pathologist has reportedly said that the remains of Adrian were consistent with a body that had been immersed in water for "several months." Exactly how many is "several?"

(i) Could Adrian's body have been in the reservoir for less than eight months?

10). Adrian was reportedly in possession of his house keys the night he went missing. Were they recovered with his body?

11) Can you categorically state there was no third party involvement in Adrian's disappearance and untimely death?

We strongly hope that you will answer the questions posed in this e-mail in order to prevent speculation and misreporting of the facts (as in the JEP)?

You will no doubt be aware, through social media, and comments left on "accredited" media sites that there is a fair amount of speculation and little trust/confidence in the way Operation Panama was handled. It is hoped you will answer our questions as full, frankly and honestly, as you can in an effort to curtail speculation/misreporting, and possibly most importantly restore some faith in the island's police force.

We will, in the interest of openness, and transparency, be publishing this e-mail on one of our Blogsites. Please be advised that your answers/reply will be considered for publication also.

We thank you for your time and look forward to you helping us keeping the record straight in this truly tragic turn of events.

N.McMurray/Rico Sorda."(END)

Team Voice DO have many other questions to put to the States of Jersey Police/DS Gull concerning Operation Panama and they will be published, or e-mailed to DS Gull, depending on what response we receive from these questions.

  1. This JEP 'journalist' Jack Maguire tells the public that a 4 metre deep reservoir is 30 metres deep (that is around SEVEN times the truth according to the Jersey Waterworks Company!)

Maguire then tells you he was just quoting the senior Police Officer who one might expect to know the true facts.

Maguire then refuses your request that the public be advised of the misleading statements made in the newspaper.

If ever any of we islanders wondered why the JEP (our only local newspaper unfortunately) has been abandoned by approximately half its former readers in recent years I think you have given us the answer.

Sloppy, unprofessional journalism. Or perhaps deliberately misleading journalism.

One really has to wonder exactly what it takes to get the glorious title of being "accredited".

It sure as eggs is eggs can have nothing to do with quality.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Good point about accreditation Anonymous. I would add the following question. Why do Ministers and States departments continue to give priority to journalists of Maguire and the JEP, BBC, ITV calibre generally over bloggers such as yourselves when any one can see that in terms of truthfulness and quality you knock them in to a cocked hat. Perhaps the answer lies in your other comment? This being that such organisations are used because they are happy to mislead the public and paint a particular picture for the States?

  3. Why don't you ask Mr Gull for an interview and then put these questions to him?

    1. The cops, and Home Affairs Minister, have refused me an interview claiming they only give interviews to "accredited" media.

    2. Enlightening. Looks like anonymous @09.53 was bang on the money.

    3. Am I mistaken in thinking you have got interviews with Ministers in the past (when it suited them)?

      Delete
    4. Indeed I have interviewed a number of Ministers and politicians from across the political divide. Not one of them have ever complained about the published interview, in fact, I have had nothing but positive feedback from those I have interviewed.

    5. VFC, perhaps you could ask the SOJP to clarify what exactly they mean by "accredited media"? Accredited to what? I am not aware of any statutory accreditation process, and I would therefore ask them to provide the legal underpinning on which they unilaterally decide who they will treat as an accredited journalist.

      Delete
    6. There is no real definition of "accredited" it is just a word they use to avoid answering real questions.

      Delete
    7. That is the point. They are a publicly accountable body, and are therefore required not only to act in accordance with the law, but to be open and impartial.

In order to legitimately claim that they will only deal with questions from the accredited media, the onus is on them to demonstrate to you that they are following either legislation or offical guidelines. The starting point is for them to provide you with a written copy of their media policy, evidence that the concept of an accredited media actually exists in law, and a copy of any application process to become accredited media. Perhaps an FOI request would be required.

      Delete
    8. Oh dear. Perhaps they haven't got a media strategy. Or at least one that can be revealed to the plebs.

      Bring back Lenny Harper :)

    1. At least they are trying to get some answers to rule out if anything untoward happened. Its not as if Adrian was walking on the beach and got swept away by a wave, somehow he ended up unfound for 8 months in a reservoir. In 2016 public services have to be accountable for their actions and an explanation other than equipment/dogs are not infallible, it was too deep and hostile terrain should be given. It is 2016 not the 1960s and any of us in public service have to be accountable and justify our actions.

      Delete
    2. The comment at 10:22 just may be correct, but surely that is the point of the questions, these are straight forward questions that require a straight forward reply by the SOJP. To NOT answer these questions on the basis of "you are not accredited media" will be the most damning cop out (excuse the pun) of all. I will not quote the Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus regarding 'accredited' but anyone can look it up, and 12:51 above hit the nail on the head. Perhaps the law officers can give clear directive as to 'how' the likes of the JEP, BBC, ITV etc. have achieved this 'accreditation' and what is it based on...ISO 9001?, 9002? in other words WHAT certifying body has given accreditation to these so called 'Accredited Media'. Now on to a further point and it flows from the many questions put to the SOJP above, in today's world of forensic sciences there is very, very little that can stay hidden. With that in mind and from the limited photos of the scene of discovery I would have as a guess that Adrian was discovered on the western side of the reservoir because of the overhanging trees. So surely it should be possible to discover just exactly 'where' Adrian managed to somehow enter the high point of the reservoir and presumably fall in. He would have left fibres from clothing etc. at his point of entry, was there a fence? did he crash through bushes, trees?. I personally find it very hard to believe that this young man somehow on a pitch black night with no personal illumination (i.e torch) somehow entered what should by all accounts be a very secure site. I really do hope Superintendent Gull will be forthcoming with full and honest answers because Adrian's family and all of his friends deserve nothing less. This whole episode is a very dark mark on this Islands capability to function as it should. RIP Adrian

  6. Good journalism by professionals must be about research and then asking the right questions as you both have done on your blog by following the trail of the police investigation and here is the bottom line, once you have that information then checking it with A) the source and B) any other professional references.

Had Mr Maguire ( supposed paid reporter ) from the JEP done so, he would not have come out with the load of tosh about the depth of Handois Reservoir.

Professional research and reporting should be about following the facts and reflecting this in the article or report. The Jersey police are looking sloppy yet again which could be also be looked upon as uncaring or plain not bothered. The JEP on not wishing to correct an obvious error's shows in broad day light what utter contempt Mr Sibcy ( editor ) and his reporters hold for their shrinking readership.

There is obviously something badly wrong with the Jersey Police Force with the inaccurate bullish*t they have come out with or like the Jersey Evening Post do they think people are so stupid and therefore treated with utter contempt ?

Of course I may be wrong, let us see the response given to your email. While most homes on Jersey have computers and the growing numbers are getting honest information from the internet in open reporting. The JEP has less power now than the past and unless it starts treating it's readers like informed adults it will be lucky to survive another five years unless big adverts start appearing for all the States quangos, and departments which will keep it from sinking and confirm the rag as Mr T. Pitman stated, the true mouth piece of the Government and not a guardian of truth for the people.

    ReplyDelete
  7. A well formulated list of questions. They have to be asked. Unfortunately in Jersey people who ask meaningful thought provoking questions are so often frowned upon. The disappearance of this young man and subsequent discovery unfortunately leaves more unanswered questions than answered.

    1. Not just frowned upon Pat, bankrupted or imprisoned by the Jersey Bailiff's corrupt courts and even bounced over the bonnet of a speeding car. In the latter case while the equally corrupt Jersey police do nothing. The above examples are what happens to our best elected representatives and if anyone doubts me they have all been reported on by this blog. Is it any wonder most of us keep our head down? Consider me. I have a year left to get my exams finished at work. Once that is done I am out of here. I'm only 22 and I love Jersey in so many ways. But it has sold its soul past the point of retrieval.

  8. " The cops, and Home Affairs Minister, have refused me an interview claiming they only give interviews to "accredited" media "

Then they consider that Chief Minister Gorst, Senator Ozouf, Ex Senator Ferguson,Ex Senator Syvret and other important people have been unafraid to give open blog interviews but the police ( serving the community ) and home affairs minister ( rely on the publics vote ) hide in plain sight. Just cowards with a lot to hide ?

    1. Complete bull as you say. How many interviews did elected States Members like Trevor and Shona Pitman, Montfort Tadier, Mike Higgins and Bob Hill do over the years with "unaccredited" media like vfc. The stance from ministers and the police is cowardly. They are meant to both serve and answer to us.

  9. How come no one asked these questions when they found young Adrian? Regarding the "Hostile Terrain" what exactly does he mean or is it just buzz words to keep people happy.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Utter respect to both you and Rico for your continuing to attempt to find answers to a lot of outstanding questions. Questions that require honest and open answers, because this will not go away until this happens. Clearly the SoJP think we are all fools as it appears so do the JEP, and for reporter to give a response like that is an utter disgrace. Seemingly it is alright to give incorrect information and not bother to stand corrected. If Adrian had followed the route that it is believed he took he would have entered Handois Reservoir at the North East end, and this is where he was found. WHY was he not found earlier???

Just as an aside to this the other headline in Saturday's JEP was about the lack of help for Morgan Huelin from CAMHS, saying he 'did not fit the criteria'. I don't wish to swear but what the **** is that all about? Clearly from the reports of previous behaviour and depression he most certainly did fit the criteria. Another failed family and a lost young life. Oh - and guess what? CAMHS do not wish to make a comment.

Until both these agencies DO make comments we have to assume they are unable to because they have something to hide.

    1. It is incredible how many times those of us reading and commenting on this blog find ourselves needing to quote or refer to former Deputy Trevor Pitman. But I well remember him highlighting how in his professional experience troubled teenagers were regularly facing waits of up to three months to see someone at CAMHS to try and get help. What the hell does that say about the priorities of our far right government?

  12. A key issue also relates to the independent review of operation Panama by police 'experts' from the UK -

    a) Were they fully briefed that Handois was not extensively search by the Humberside team, if not why not and decided not to fully brief them?

    b) If they were correctly briefed what were their recommendations to complete the search of Handois as surly this was a key area to fully search - cannot believe they would have, given their experience in the UK not make recommendations to engage alternative specialists in order to complete the required full search.

    c) Will the report and its recommendations now be published, if not why the secrecy? Surely if there were shortcomings is it not more important any tragic cases in the future are aware of what went wrong in Jersey to ensure it never happens again?

Last but not least surprised the MSM have not focused on if the Humberside team had prawn cocktails whilst in Jersey and if so how much it cost!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hope you don't mind me straying off subject but can you give an update on how much the abuse inquiry has cost Jersey so far? Also is there a predicted final total? Thank ye kindly.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Whatever the final cost of the Abuse Inquiry it will be money well spent if the final outcome and report is as it should be. The fact that many, many children were failed by the very services that were supposed to be there to protect them and failed dismally and furthermore covered up in an attempt to save their own backs.

There is no cost that could be put on that.

    2. Wholly agree, Jill. Just wondered where we are right now. We all know the majority of the millions has been hijacked by the States' lawyers while many victims have been fobbed off with comparative pennies.

    3. Jill as always spot on the money. One thing that has always bothered me about the whole HDLG time frame is simply this. The JEP has been this Islands so called newspaper for over one hundred years, are we all seriously expected to believe that this paper and all its past editors and reporters 'never ever' knew what was going on? And more to the point WHO was involved? the whole basis of news papers is to keep Government and all those involved in Government 'in check' this will hang like the sword of Damocles over their collective heads forever.

    4. The States lawyers were not paid out of COI funds so far as I know

  14. Is it feasible for you to do another video from the last point Adrian was seen to the route to the north west of the reservoir so that non locals can see how he may have got there. And just to clarify any possible readons why he would have gone that way? Is it a short cut home? If not, then was he running/hiding or could he have been disorientated? Should the Police not look back where the cadaver dogs, drones, searchers went and try to establish what happened. What about that car load of lads, the man in a mustard suit and the taxi - did they ever come forward?

Bad news. The last time we had one was Bob Le Breton.

Secondly how was it that he was then allowed to remain as a Jurat? You sure have a disturbing kind of a justice system in your island. I read this blog regularly and often when I do read the stories and comments I conclude that if I lived there I would be chopping down a tree and making a dugout canoe.

At best they support it by their silence and inactivity. The excellent submissions above only confirm this.

    1. Sorry to be a pain but this case has been so sprawling in its tragic unfolding it is easy for some of us to get confused.

What I would like clarified for my own understanding is this.

1 - When precisely date wise was Handois first searched?

2- Was a statement made by police claiming the reservoir HAD been EXTENSIVELY searched, and if so was this claim made by Jersey police or Humberside?

3-When did the post-body find claim that Handois actually HAD NOT been extensively searched arise?

Sorry if I am being dum but I am trying to answer questions for both my own peace of mind and with friends at university I have been keeping up to date with this tragic story.

Thanks in advance for your time.

      Delete
    2. I thought Jersey police said that Handois had been extensively searched to their satisfaction with Sonar?

Don't remember any mention of hostile terrain preventing them from doing this either.

Didn't someone from Humberside come on telling everyone how brilliant this Sonar was as it could be manipulated around at different angles?

      Delete
    3. This was the SOJP official statement concerning the search (in general not specifically Handois) when it was being scaled down back in December:

“We have methodically and systematically searched everywhere that we believe Adrian could be, anywhere where there has been some potential sighting or where he may have subsequently travelled. We still believe he may well be in that area somewhere, but it is in a difficult place where we have been unable to find him".

Note in particular the last sentence - it is quite clear from their statement that they very much made it clear that they believed he may well be still in that area, just in a difficult place for them to find him. Exactly what ultimately proved to be the case.

      Delete
    4. In respect of the Humberside police and sonar, the only official statement released that specifically mentioned them (that I can locate) stated:

"As well as these agencies two officers from Humberside Police are in the island with the latest sonar equipment searching large expanses of water which have proved difficult for States divers due to depth and visibility."

      Delete
    5. Great value for £14.000 of our taxpayers money. Not. Whatever one thinks, corruption or incompetence, the report must come out and someone needs to take responsibility. How about it Mr Bowron?

      Delete
    6. Are we seriously meant to believe that sat on a tender in a comparatively small area of water properly used portable sonar would not have picked up a human body; but it would small fish and even an old car tyre?

Don't give us the bull about 'hostile terrain' either. A degree of over-hanging trees and brambles would be exactly the signal to utilise the sonar very painstakingly there.

Alright, not if you knew there was no body there in the first place.

  24. Have the Police acknowledge receipt of this e-mail yet?

  25. Can someone point me to any explanation as to where Adrian's belt was found, where it was found and how close to Handois?

    1. Police statement:

Adrian’s belt was located on the Saturday by a householder in his garden in Le Passage, near to the boundary with Cooke’s Roses Farm. It was loosely coiled. A friend of Adrian has said that Adrian occasionally removed his belt and carried it in a coiled fashion. It is believed that at some point Adrian had removed and was carrying his belt. It is possible that he dropped or placed this when either leaving or entering the garden near to the Cooke’s Roses Farm complex, possibly at around 02:30 if the last report of hearing shouting related to Adrian passing southwards through the site.

  27. One does not need the benefit of hindsight to know that Handois and nearby waterbodies should have been the absolute priority of the search. The simple, sad fact is that the search of Handois was not only demonstrably deficient, but the Jersey police knew it. So the question for Bowron is this: given that he knew that Humberside police had not been able to perform a satisfactory search of the reservoir, what further steps did he take to exclude Handois from enquiries?

  31. That was supposed to say tramplng not tramping? Not knowing the lad, or the area, after everything Ive read I ask because it seems as if he was hiding? If it was misadventure and down to being drunk and disorientated why cant the Police release a bit more info to appease peoples' concerns? Unless he was cornered in the garden and put into a car and then put in the reservoir weeks later. I know when Ive been partying I fall asleep after too much drink not walk around for hours. Th story just doesnt seem to fit misadventure not like the lass in York or the lad in durham who both fell into rivers after drinking and died. Those rivers were at the side of footpaths. Adrians story doesnt seem to fit the profile of misadventure. You just want justice for the lad.

Surely a good question to the Humberside Police would be: Are Humberside Police satisfied with their £14,000 nothing found in Handois result. Considering two of their highly trained officers from their Police Force were brought to the island with the state of the art, fool proof, sonar equipment? Not only questions to Jersey Police need to be asked.

  34. When is the inquest to be announced?

    ReplyDelete
  35. You have raised some very important questions. The one issue for me is the combined search of the reservoir finding nothing apart from a tyre and some fish. Hopefully the inquest will clear up the reason Mr Lynch lay submerged and undiscovered for 8 months. The body should rise to the surface anytime between 1 to 8 weeks depending on water temperature and depth. Do members of the public or water board ever visit the reservoir.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Can we have an update on the election hustings this week please? You are the only site to offer unbiased reporting of all candidates.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What's to do now?

    Firstly the inquest.

Of course the main purpose is to establish cause of death and to help the family by doing this.

But in this case, the cause of death is a mystery, since the police version of events does not make sense. But will the coroner even go there at all, nvolving as it does searching questioning of the police account??

So is it possible, with the consent of the family and friends, to acquire a status which allows that person to ask questions? Or for family and friends to ask questions?

    Secondly, the external review

Some have called for it to be published. I am not sure this is the way to go.

I don’t think that external reviews of major investigations are normally published. They are, as we know from the controversy surrounding the Met Police review of Operation Rectangle, not intended to assign blame but to improve performance.

Note that a) We can't all run the police force! and b) (as an aside) these reviews MUST NOT be used for disciplinary purposes. Of course the Met Report was used for exactly that to suspend Graham Power.

So what in this case can we demand - as it seems absolutely clear that the police investigation and their explanations do not make sense?

Well, first, we must demand answers to questions, as Team Voice have done. However the police have refused this request.

If we believe the Police are acting in good faith in this case, then it is fine to wait until the inquest, when the details of the search, a coherent explanation of what happened etc. will be given, or if the police have failed and they admit it, then at least we will have something like the truth. Note that this depends pretty well entirely on the personality and drive to establish the truth of the coroner.

Relevant questions in this connection - are coroners in Jersey from Jersey or from outside? How many people will be there?

However if we believe the Police may be acting in bad faith in this case, and there is something being hidden, then saying “wait until the inquest” is a brush-off, they are making us wait and after the inquest, which they believe will be a controlled affair, no one will be any the wiser, and the mystery will remain, which would be appalling for the family and for us all.

Second, we can get the Police Authority to grill the police chief on this whole affair, and if his answers are not OK then they should commission a genuine review of the investigation (as they have resources which we do not have, and furthermore, it is their job!!).

Important question as an aside, are their hearings with the Police Chief in public, and if not why not . . . . ? The hearings of the equivalent body in London are.

Third, if there is still no satisfactory outcome, then there will have to be a public campaign to get HMIC (Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary) to do a one-off Inquiry or even to get HMG to intervene by looking into the matter.

    This does not look good.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Inquest - as to whether there will be a robust and detailed grilling of the Jersey Police and their actions, forget it!

The Jersey Establishment will ensure the 'right person' is in the chair and the MSM can be relied to keep quiet (as they have - interesting there has been no comments following VFC reasonable questions / observations).

  39. Are you planning a new post soon?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Let's be clear, despite all the speculation over the last 8 months, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Adrian's death was anything other than misadventure. None.

Far too many commenters on this blog are only too willing to construct conspiracy theories to 'fill in the gaps', and to project their antipathy towards the local authorities onto any incident of significance.

Assuming there is no material evidence that is not in the public domain, the only possible conclusions to an inquest must be either an open verdict, (i.e. it's too uncertain to draw any conclusions), or death by misadventure. The most plausible scenario is that Adrian, in his confused state, fell into Handois reservoir and drowned, and that his body somehow became snagged underwater, e.g. by fallen branches.

Are there other possibilities? Well, yes, of course there are. But in the absence of ANY evidence to the contrary, it is pointless to speculate beyond the most likely scenario.

The Jersey police have not covered themselves in glory here. The fact that they failed to undertake an exhaustive search of a large body of water within a short distance of Adrian's last known position is shocking, and the investigation should be subject to an independent inquiry. However, it is beyond stupid to start talking about the police acting in bad faith, or hinting that they have colluded in a coverup of an unlawful killing. It is also extremely disrespectful towards Adrian's family, who have surely suffered enough without their son being used as a character in some anti-establishment fantasy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well said. I will also add that in terms of the search - it is all very well saying in hindsight that they didn't do enough to search the reservoir, and they didn't. But decisions as to the level of resources to employ can only be taken based on considerations at the time. They did use divers who weren't able to do a complete search and they augmented it with specialist sonar from the UK, both of which didn't discover the body. It is all very well saying now that they clearly needed to do more, but at the time they had done quite a lot, and had no evidence that he was in there.

    2. Are you Mike Bowron or Mr Gull? While it is obviously wrong to assume a cover up me thinks you protest too much.

The acid test is just compare the good faith and extreme efforts Power and Harper displayed to try and set right decades of Jersey establishment cover up.

"Let's be clear, despite all the speculation over the last 8 months, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Adrian's death was anything other than misadventure. None."

Did the taxi at 2:30 passing Thistle Grove heading South (Adrian's last sighting) ever come forward? You use the term 'conspiracy theories' when none have been offered. I agree that 'open verdict' could well be the outcome of the inquest.

There is a double whammy here. There can be absolutely no doubt that the Jersey Police have made one almighty balls up here. We have the right for privacy and closure for the family and the 'public interest' in the Police handling of this sad and tragic case. One can hide behind the other. How does the person captured on CCTV - who seems to be walking fine - tally in with such a terrible conclusion. There are many unanswered questions.

You suggest that Handois Reservoir is a (large body) of water. That is very suggestive. Handois is in fact relatively small and shallow if compared to the other reservoirs we have on the Island. This is what the Police said in their May 2016 press release.

"There are a number of water sites in the general area ranging from garden ponds to the Handois and Dannemarche reservoirs. A number of these aspects could be and were covered by trained Fire and Rescue officers and divers from TTS. Other more challenging aspects were reviewed and where applicable covered by sonar specialists from Humberside Police."

Humberside were called in to cover the more challenging aspects where applicable. You can't fault that. Handois was a very small search area for them. If you research what they do you will see this. When they left what did they tell the Jersey Police? Sorry, we can't search this small reservoir because it's 4 mtrs deep and is located in "Hostile Terrain". There are no conspiracy theories just some very important questions that might or might not get answered.

One thing that must happen is the SOJP needs to be externally reviewed by the HMIC

    Rico

  42. One could say that there is equally enough evidence to suggest anything other than misadventure.
